Position Summary & Responsibilities Position Summary:
This position is responsible for developing, implementing and delivering cognitive skills-building services to offenders releasing to, but not limited to, the area supervised by the Salina Parole Unit. The incumbent will work closely with the supervisor and parole/re-entry team to identify the classes, after care groups and one on one services that are needed. This position will work closely with the Parole Officer in order to address programmatic needs of the offender population. This position shall serve as the lead program provider for cognitive programs deemed necessary by the appointing authority to carry out his agency's goals and mission. Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: The incumbent in this position is the lead cognitive skills building program provider. The incumbent will be responsible for developing, implementing, coordinating, delivering and documenting the cognitive skills-building services to offenders in the areas of the Salina Parole Unit. This position is responsible for delivering cognitive services to offenders supervised by, but not limited to, the Salina Parole Unit. Work will include assessing appropriateness for programming. The incumbent in this position is the primary provider of assistance to parole officers in learning and providing skills related to EPICS and cognitive restructuring for their use in case management. This position will assist with the coordination of scheduling, tracking, and documentation of all administrative aspects of cognitive services provided in the Salina Parole Unit. The incumbent will assist the supervisor in, coordinating the referrals, recruiting participants, screening and assessing for readiness, establishing classes; tracking participants; reporting to parole/reentry staff on progress and ensuring available resources are fully utilized. This position will follow the curriculum that has been identified by supervisor to be utilized for cognitive programming for offenders and to stick to the fidelity of the programming as outlined by evidenced base practices and departmental policy. This position is also responsible for data tracking; reviewing data on cognitive services; reporting trends and outcomes; and otherwise tracking information as needed to determine the number of offenders served; the outcomes of placements or interventions, and the impact of cognitive services. This position will communicate and work directly with parole officers and case managers to identify the best interventions for offenders referred. This will include reporting attendance, progress, or need for one-on-one interventions. This position will assist the supervisor with brokering additional services, by recruiting co-facilitators, training volunteers and staff in delivering one-on-one services, and working with volunteers, staff and offenders in establishing aftercare groups. This position works closely with the supervisor and parole/reentry staff in the office to identify cognitive services needed; to address gaps in those services; and to develop an array of cognitive services. Performs other duties as assigned. Maintain appropriate certifications as required. Attends training and meetings as required. Represents the Department of Corrections in community education and public relations.
Qualifications Education :
High School Diploma or Equivalent Licensing & Certification :
Must be or become trained in cognitive based programs as approved by KDOC. Will attend parole officer basic training sessions as directed. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Minimum Qualifications :
Six months of experience in planning, implementing and monitoring activities relevant to the agency's programs.
Preferred Qualifications :
  • A bachelor's degree with major coursework in criminal justice, the social sciences, the behavioral sciences, or business management or related field.
Agency approved substitution for bachelor's degree: 60 semester hours of college credit, with twelve (12) hours in corrections or related field, and three (3) years of experience working with offenders in corrections. One (1) year of experience working planning, implementing, and monitoring activities relevant to offenders in corrections. Self-directed. Demonstrates professional alignment with evidence-based practices including cognitive-based skills-building programs, classes and interventions. Strong facilitation skills, including ability to be purposeful, engaging and respectful with offenders, and flow with group dynamics during skills-building classes. Experience in skills-building, in a group or individual setting. Job knowledge in corrections. Organizational skills. Able to work effectively with a team. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presentation. Ability to boundary span between areas of operation.
