A Probation Officer or Correctional Treatment Specialist supervises criminal offenders who have been placed on probation as part of a court sentence. Meets with offenders and families, monitors activities, and checks to see that the terms of the probation are being followed. Arranges social services for the offender such as drug rehab or job training; writes reports and recommendations to the court.
The Lead Probation Officer oversees the daily operations of the Tribal Probation Department, providing leadership, supervision, and support to Probation Officers while ensuring compliance with Tribal, federal, and state laws, court orders, and departmental policies. This position supervises staff, manages performance, assigns caseloads, and promotes professional development. The Lead Probation Officer also maintains a limited caseload of juvenile and adult offenders, prepares court reports and rehabilitation plans, monitors offender compliance, and collaborates with Tribal Court, law enforcement, treatment providers, and community partners. Additional responsibilities include assisting with grant administration, program reporting, policy development, budgeting, and strategic planning to support effective probation services, offender rehabilitation, and public safety.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Lead, supervise, and mentor Probation Officers by assigning caseloads, evaluating performance, providing training, and ensuring compliance with departmental policies and professional standards.
Oversee probation case management by conducting investigations, supervising a limited caseload of juvenile and adult offenders, developing rehabilitation plans, and monitoring compliance with court-ordered conditions.
Prepare and present court documentation including petitions, reports, recommendations, and testimony for Tribal Court proceedings.
Coordinate probation services with Tribal departments, law enforcement, behavioral health providers, schools, treatment agencies, and community organizations to support offender rehabilitation and public safety.
Ensure compliance with Tribal Code, court orders, grant requirements, and applicable Tribal, federal, and state laws while maintaining accurate and confidential case records.
Support departmental operations by assisting with grant administration, budgeting, program reporting, policy development, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
Promote effective program delivery by reviewing case documentation, monitoring staff workloads, implementing best practices, identifying training needs, and supporting strategic planning and departmental goals.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred. Will Associates degree with experience. Valid driver's license and meet insurability requirements.
