Job Description

The West Virginia Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DCR) is seeking a Probation/Parole Officer 1 for a unique, hybrid, statewide position serving all 55 counties. This statutory role performs entry-level supervisory and investigative work for Parole Services, DCR Prisons/Jails, and the Interstate Compact Office. Responsibilities include providing continuous supervision and counseling to a designated caseload of adult probationers, parolees, and mandatory supervision offenders to assist in their social adjustment. Crucially, this officer manages a caseload of incarcerated WVDCR offenders held on detainers in other states, handles administrative revocation hearings, and assists with extradition transports from surrounding states back to West Virginia jails. The position requires conducting various investigative duties, including home plans, clemency reports, co-operative investigations for other states, post-sentence reports for the Parole Board, and violation reports. Due to the nature of the work, applicants must be comfortable with close, continuous contact with potentially dangerous offenders with criminal backgrounds. Firearms are to be distributed at the discretion of the Commissioner of the DCR and anyone authorized to carry a firearm must successfully complete a psychological evaluation prior to issuance. Positions authorized to carry a firearm must meet annual training requirements established through the West Virginia Corrections Academy. This position will be based in the Wheeling Parole Office.
