Check Defense is a fast-growing federal contractor seeking an experienced Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager to lead, develop, implement, and manage all environmental, occupational health, safety, and risk management programs supporting a U.S. Army Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Training, Maintenance, Logistics, and Mission Support Services contract. The EHS Manager serves as the principal authority for workplace safety, environmental compliance, risk mitigation, hazardous material management, accident prevention, and regulatory compliance activities. This position ensures all contract operations are conducted in accordance with applicable federal, state, local, Department of Defense (DoD), Army, OSHA, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and company requirements. The successful candidate will work closely with Government representatives, Program Management, maintenance personnel, instructors, logistics staff, and quality control personnel to establish and maintain a proactive safety culture that protects personnel, property, equipment, and the environment while supporting mission readiness and contract performance.
Duties and responsibilities:
Environmental, Health & Safety Program Management Develop, implement, administer, and maintain the contract Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Program. Serve as the primary point of contact for all environmental, health, safety, and occupational risk management matters. Ensure compliance with contractual safety requirements, Army regulations, OSHA standards, environmental regulations, and company policies. Develop EHS goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and performance metrics. Promote a culture of safety, accountability, hazard awareness, and continuous improvement throughout the workforce. Develop and implement workplace safety programs to prevent injuries, illnesses, and property damage. Conduct routine workplace inspections of maintenance facilities, flight lines, classrooms, warehouses, offices, and operational areas. Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and implement corrective actions. Monitor compliance with safety procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and safe work practices. Develop and administer risk management programs supporting maintenance, logistical, training, and operational activities. Conduct risk assessments and job hazard analyses for contract activities. Identify operational hazards and recommend mitigation measures. Maintain safety performance metrics and trend analyses. Investigate workplace injuries, vehicle accidents, equipment damage, environmental incidents, and near-miss events. Conduct root-cause analyses to determine contributing factors and corrective actions. Brief leadership and Government representatives on significant safety incidents and corrective action plans. Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, Army, and installation environmental regulations. Oversee environmental programs relating to hazardous materials, hazardous waste, spill prevention, recycling, pollution prevention, and environmental stewardship. Maintain required environmental permits, records, and documentation. Administer Hazardous Material (HAZMAT) and Hazardous Waste programs. Ensure proper storage, labeling, tracking, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials and waste streams. Conduct employee training on hazardous material handling and emergency response procedures. Serve as a key advisor during emergency situations involving personnel, equipment, facilities, or environmental incidents. Required Qualifications Must be a U.S. citizen Active Secret Security Clearance or ability to obtain and maintain one. Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, Safety Management, Engineering, or a related field. Minimum 7 years of Environmental, Health & Safety experience in industrial, aviation, military, government, or related operational environments. Minimum 5 years of supervisory or management experience leading safety and environmental programs. Experience conducting workplace inspections, hazard assessments, incident investigations, and corrective action management. Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, environmental compliance requirements, and risk management principles. Experience developing and administering comprehensive EHS programs. Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Preferred Qualifications Experience supporting Department of Defense (DoD), U.S. Army Aviation, TRADOC, USAACE, or UAS operations. Certified Safety Professional (CSP). Associate Safety Professional (ASP). Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH). OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification. Experience supporting aviation maintenance, flight operations, logistics, or military training environments. Knowledge of Army Risk Management and Composite Risk Management principles. Experience managing HAZMAT, hazardous waste, and environmental compliance programs. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or higher certification. Prior military aviation, maintenance, environmental, or safety experience. Physical Requirements Ability to work in office, classroom, warehouse, maintenance shop, flight line, and outdoor operational environments. Ability to inspect facilities, climb ladders, access elevated work areas, and navigate industrial environments. Ability to walk and stand for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds. Ability to respond to emergencies and conduct field inspections in varying environmental conditions
