Construction Safety Manager Job Description This role oversees health and safety for data center construction projects, ensuring that all activities comply with established safety standards and best practices. The Construction Safety Manager reviews evolving site conditions, implements effective safety reporting structures, and provides continuous guidance to project teams. The position requires close collaboration with contractors, supervisors, and internal stakeholders to proactively identify risks, drive corrective actions, and support a strong safety culture on site. Responsibilities Review and assess the health and safety implications of changes as they occur during construction projects, ensuring that evolving site conditions remain compliant with safety requirements. Develop and implement reporting and communication structures for health and safety management performance on each project to enable accurate assessment and continuous improvement. Actively engage with all aspects of day-to-day health and safety management on site, maintaining a visible presence and providing guidance to project teams. Attend and participate in meetings with management and personnel, including planning and coordination reviews for both day-to-day operations and longer-term safety planning for work activities. Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of health and safety planning at the site level by assessing communication and coordination among contractors, workers, and supervisors. Conduct independent health and safety audits on all aspects of construction management to monitor compliance between documented safety plans and actual work performed on site. Assess compliance with agreed health and safety key performance indicators (KPIs) across all stages of the project lifecycle. Coordinate work activities on construction sites from a safety perspective, ensuring that tasks are sequenced and executed in a safe manner. Identify, assess, and evaluate high-risk activities and ensure appropriate controls and mitigation measures are in place. Conduct training, education sessions, and safety observations using the owners designated platform or tracking tools. Ensure all safety observations and findings are documented, tracked, and corrected within required timeframes. Assist in reviewing safe plans of action, lifting plans, and other task-specific safety documentation to verify adequacy and compliance. Support the assessment of contractor and operative competency from a safety standpoint and provide feedback as needed. Monitor data center construction projects on site from a safety perspective, providing insight and feedback to internal and external stakeholders. Enter safety observations and findings into the appropriate tracking tools and systems to maintain accurate records. Join weekly progress meetings to report on safety performance, discuss observations, and align on corrective and preventive actions. Contribute to weekly progress reports and provide clear feedback on safety performance to internal and external teams. Essential Skills Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly convey safety expectations and findings to diverse project stakeholders. High attention to detail with a focus on identifying hazards, non-compliance, and opportunities for safety improvement. Proven problem-solving skills, particularly in resolving safety-related issues in a construction environment. Ability to work independently and manage ones time effectively while overseeing multiple tasks and priorities on site. Knowledge of data center construction practices and associated health and safety requirements. Knowledge of construction-related standards and regulations relevant to site safety. 58 years of experience in construction, site safety, or closely related safety roles, preferably with exposure to data center projects. High school diploma or GED. Additional Skills & Qualifications Bachelors degree in safety, science, or a related field is preferred. Experience reviewing and assessing health and safety implications of design or scope changes during construction projects. Experience developing and implementing health and safety reporting and communication structures for complex projects. Experience conducting health and safety audits and monitoring compliance with safety plans and KPIs. Familiarity with entering and tracking safety observations in digital tools or owner platforms. Experience participating in planning and coordination reviews and weekly progress meetings from a safety perspective. Work Environment This position is based in Chicago, IL and primarily involves working on active construction sites for data center projects, combined with some office-based tasks. The standard schedule is approximately 40 hours per week. The role requires regular on-site presence to monitor construction activities, attend meetings, and conduct safety audits. Work involves frequent interaction with contractors, supervisors, and internal project teams in a collaborative environment focused on safety and performance. The position uses standard computer equipment such as a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and headset, along with digital safety tracking tools and reporting platforms. The environment includes typical construction site conditions, such as noise, varying weather, and physical activity, and requires adherence to appropriate safety and site attire as defined by project and site safety requirements. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Northlake, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $60.00 - $85.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
