Confidential Position Summary A confidential North American industrial services organization is seeking an experienced Regional Environmental, Health and Safety Manager to lead and strengthen EHS performance across multiple operating locations in the United States. This position is responsible for developing, implementing and continuously improving the company's environmental, health and safety strategy throughout a complex, high-risk operating environment. Operations include work performed within heavy industrial facilities involving heavy equipment, mobile machinery, rail operations, material handling, maintenance activities and interaction with customer-owned equipment and infrastructure. The Regional EHS Manager will provide leadership and oversight to site-level safety professionals, operations leaders and frontline supervisors. This individual must be comfortable spending significant time in the field, assessing working conditions, coaching employees and leaders, investigating incidents and ensuring corrective actions are effectively implemented. The successful candidate will be a hands-on safety leader who can establish consistent expectations across geographically dispersed locations while adapting programs to meet site-specific customer, operational and regulatory requirements. Essential Responsibilities EHS Leadership and Strategy- Develop and execute a comprehensive North American EHS strategy aligned with company objectives, regulatory requirements and customer expectations.
- Establish consistent EHS standards, policies, procedures and performance expectations across all operating locations.
- Serve as the senior EHS advisor to executive leadership, regional management, operations leaders and site management.
- Promote a proactive safety culture focused on employee engagement, leadership accountability, hazard recognition and prevention.
- Provide leadership, coaching and direction to site-level EHS professionals and operational leaders.
- Ensure EHS expectations are incorporated into operational planning, staffing, budgeting and performance management. Field Safety and Operational Support
- Conduct regular field visits, facility inspections, safety audits and operational risk assessments.
- Evaluate hazards associated with heavy equipment, mobile equipment, rail operations, maintenance, welding and cutting, confined spaces, fall exposure, lockout/tagout, material handling and other high-risk industrial activities.
- Partner with operations to develop practical controls that protect employees without unnecessarily disrupting productivity.
- Participate in pre-job planning, job hazard analyses, new project implementation and site startup activities.
- Provide EHS oversight during operational changes, equipment installations, contract transitions and the opening or acquisition of new locations.
- Ensure contractor and visitor safety requirements are established and consistently enforced. Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state and local environmental, health and safety regulations, including OSHA, EPA, DOT and related requirements.
- Monitor regulatory developments and communicate changes that may affect company operations.
- Coordinate regulatory inspections, customer audits and agency inquiries.
- Ensure required permits, reports, records and regulatory submissions are accurate and completed on time.
- Oversee compliance with environmental requirements involving waste management, spill prevention, stormwater, air emissions and other site-specific obligations.
- Maintain accurate OSHA recordkeeping and ensure consistent injury and illness classification practices across all locations. Incident Management and Corrective Action
- Lead or provide oversight for investigations involving serious injuries, near misses, property damage, environmental events and significant operational incidents.
- Ensure investigations identify root causes and contributing organizational, operational and behavioral factors.
- Develop and track corrective and preventive actions through completion.
- Review incident trends and recommend targeted improvements based on recurring hazards or performance concerns.
- Coordinate timely communication and escalation of serious incidents to executive leadership and other appropriate stakeholders.
- Support return-to-work efforts and collaborate with Human Resources, operations and claims partners on workplace injury matters. Training and Employee Engagement
- Develop and maintain standardized EHS orientation, compliance and leadership training programs.
- Ensure employees receive required training based on their assigned duties and workplace exposures.
- Strengthen frontline supervisor capability through training in hazard recognition, safety conversations, incident response and accountability.
- Develop effective toolbox talks, safety alerts and employee communications.
- Promote employee participation in safety committees, observations, inspections and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Evaluate training effectiveness and address gaps in employee understanding or application.
- Develop and manage a risk-based EHS audit program for all North American locations.
- Establish leading and lagging performance indicators, dashboards and reporting standards.
- Analyze incident rates, near misses, observations, audit findings, workers' compensation trends and other performance data.
- Present EHS performance, risks and improvement plans to executive leadership.
- Identify best practices and ensure successful improvements are shared across locations.
- Verify that corrective actions produce sustained improvement rather than temporary compliance.
- Support the development of annual EHS objectives, budgets and capital requests. Customer and Stakeholder Relationships
- Serve as a primary EHS contact for key customers and facility representatives.
- Build effective working relationships with customer safety departments, regulatory agencies, union representatives and internal business leaders.
- Ensure company employees comply with both internal requirements and customer-specific safety rules.
- Participate in customer meetings, audits, performance reviews and incident discussions.
- Professionally represent the organization during sensitive or high-visibility EHS matters. Qualifications Required
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science or a related field.
- At least 10 years of progressive EHS experience in heavy industry, manufacturing, steel production, industrial services, construction, mining, transportation or a comparable high-risk environment.
- At least five years of experience leading EHS programs across multiple sites, regions or business units.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, mentoring or providing functional leadership to EHS professionals.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and recognized industrial safety practices.
- Experience leading serious incident investigations and root-cause analyses.
- Experience developing and implementing standardized EHS programs across geographically dispersed operations.
- Ability to work effectively with hourly employees, frontline supervisors, operations leaders, executives, customers and regulatory agencies.
- Strong written, verbal, presentation and organizational skills.
- Ability to travel approximately 50
- 70%, including occasional overnight or extended travel.
- Valid driver's license and ability to satisfy company driving requirements. Preferred
- Experience working in steel mills, foundries, industrial maintenance or heavy-equipment operations.
- Experience supporting both union and non-union workforces.
- Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager or an equivalent credential.
- Experience with
ISO 14001, ISO
45001 or comparable management systems.- Experience with rail safety, mobile equipment, cranes, lockout/tagout, confined-space entry and heavy industrial maintenance.
- Experience managing environmental compliance programs.
