Role Summary We are seeking an experienced, proactive, and field-oriented Safety Manager / Director to lead, elevate, and execute our enterprise-wide safety program. Based out of our corporate headquarters in Adrian, MI , this individual will serve as the champion of our safety culture. You will oversee regulatory compliance, track and report OSHA metrics, manage multi-line insurance claims (Workers' Compensation, Auto/Fleet, General Liability), conduct thorough incident investigations, and lead hands-on site inspections and training sessions across our field locations. Key Responsibilities 1.
Regulatory Compliance & OSHA Tracking OSHA Recordkeeping:
Maintain complete accuracy of OSHA 300, 301, and 300A logs across all company entities. Ensure timely annual electronic submissions to OSHA's Injury Tracking Application (ITA).
Postings & Standards:
Verify that all required federal, state-specific, and local safety posters and regulatory notices are up to date across all offices, yards, and temporary job sites.
Regulatory Updates:
Continuously monitor federal (OSHA 1926/1910, DOT, PHMSA) and state-level safety regulations to ensure company policies remain fully compliant and updated. 2.
Field Site Inspections & Training Delivery Job Site Audits:
Travel regularly to job sites and regional facility yards to conduct thorough safety inspections, audit trenching/excavation, aerial lift, traffic control setup, and equipment operation.
Safety Training & Onboarding:
Develop and conduct hands-on training programs including New Employee Orientations, Site Inductions, Competent Person modules, and Short Service Employee (SSE) mentorship oversight.
Toolbox Talks:
Provide supervisors and foremen with relevant, actionable Safety Toolbox Talks to foster daily site awareness. 3.
Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis Comprehensive Investigations:
Lead the prompt investigation of all field incidents, including employee injuries/illnesses, utility strikes/hits, vehicle/equipment collisions, property damage, and high-potential near-misses. First Report of Incident (FROI): Manage the execution of official FROI documentation, chronological sequence of events tracking, and post-incident drug/alcohol testing protocols.
Corrective Actions:
Perform change and root-cause analyses to establish corrective action plans that prevent recurrence. 4.
Claims Management & Risk Mitigation Insurance Claims Oversight:
Act as the primary technical point of contact for Workers' Compensation, Auto/Vehicle Liability, and General Liability (GL) claims.
Subcontractor Safety & Tender:
Partner with regional managers to review subcontractor safety plans, verify Certificates of Insurance (COI), and coordinate indemnification/tender processes when third-party damages occur.
OSHA Inspection Leadership:
Serve as the primary contact during any state or federal OSHA site visits, managing report forms and follow-up communications.
Qualifications & Skill Requirements Education:
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Management, Construction Management, or equivalent practical experience.
Experience:
5+ years of dedicated EHS leadership experience in heavy civil construction, utility infrastructure, directional drilling, or telecommunications sectors.
Certifications:
Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Safety Health Manager (CSHM), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or OSHA Authorized 10/30-Hour Construction Trainer strongly preferred.
Technical Knowledge:
Deep working knowledge of
OSHA 1926
(Construction) and 1910 (General Industry) standards, DOT regulations, MUTCD work zone traffic control, and One-Call utility locate protocols.
Claims Handling:
Direct experience managing Workers' Comp, Commercial Fleet, and General Liability claims alongside insurance carriers and legal representatives.
Travel:
Ability and willingness to travel 30
  • 50% to field job sites and regional hubs (company vehicle or travel allowance provided).
Licensing:
Valid Driver's License with a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
