Job Title Industrial Health and Safety Manager Location Corporate Office, Trenton MI Position Summary The Industrial Health and Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing all occupational health and safety programs at a metal recycling and steel mill service organization with locations in multiple states. This role ensures compliance with OSHA and applicable state and local regulations while promoting a strong safety culture in a high-risk industrial environment involving heavy equipment, mobile machinery, cutting/torch operations, material handling, and hazardous materials. Key Responsibilities Safety Program Management Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety policies, procedures, and standard operating practices specific to scrap metal processing operations. Conduct regular site inspections, job safety analyses (JSAs), and hazard assessments for yard operations, processing equipment, and mobile machinery. Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action plans for injuries, near misses, property damage, and environmental events. Track, analyze, and report safety metrics including TRIR, DART, near misses, and corrective actions. Regulatory Compliance Ensure compliance with OSHA standards (including machine guarding, lockout/tagout, confined space, hot work, powered industrial trucks, and PPE). Prepare for and manage regulatory inspections, audits, and agency interactions. Training & Employee Engagement Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors, including new-hire orientation and refresher training. Manage and/or Train employees in 10 hour OSHA. Promote employee participation in safety committees and continuous improvement initiatives. Enforce safety rules consistently while coaching supervisors and employees on safe work practices. Emergency Preparedness Develop and maintain emergency response plans for fires, explosions, spills, severe weather, and medical emergencies. Coordinate emergency drills and liaise with local fire departments and emergency responders. Leadership & Collaboration Partner with operations, maintenance, and management teams to integrate safety into daily operations and production planning. Serve as a subject matter expert on industrial safety and risk management. Recommend capital improvements, engineering controls, and PPE to reduce risk. Qualifications Required Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience). Minimum of 3 years of safety management experience in an industrial, manufacturing, recycling, or heavy equipment environment. Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations. Proven experience conducting audits, investigations, and safety training. Preferred Professional certification such as CSP, ASP, CHST, or equivalent. Experience in scrap metal, recycling, steel, foundry, or demolition operations. Certified OSHA 10 hour trainer. Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus. Physical & Work Environment Requirements Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Frequent exposure to heavy equipment, noise, dust, and industrial hazards. Ability to walk uneven terrain and climb ladders or equipment as required. Some travel is required.
