Position Summary Marcal is seeking an experienced Safety Manager to lead Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs at our paper manufacturing facility. This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership position responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, reducing operational risk, strengthening safety programs, and building a proactive safety culture across the facility. The ideal candidate brings strong safety leadership experience from a heavy manufacturing, continuous-process, paper/pulp, or similarly complex industrial environment . This individual should be comfortable spending significant time on the plant floor, partnering with production and maintenance teams, conducting investigations and audits, and coaching employees and leaders on safe work practices. Key Responsibilities Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of facility-wide EHS programs. Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, EPA, state, local, and federal safety and environmental regulations . Subpart R . Support and manage Process Safety Management (PSM) requirements where applicable. Conduct routine plant safety inspections, audits, hazard assessments, and risk assessments. Identify hazards associated with machinery, chemical handling, confined spaces, maintenance activities, and other industrial processes. Develop and manage critical safety programs including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Confined Space Entry, Fall Protection, and Hot Work . Maintain required EHS documentation, including

logs, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), permits, inspection records, and training documentation . Develop and deliver engaging safety training for production, maintenance, contractor, and leadership personnel. Maintain a visible presence on the plant floor and coach supervisors and employees on safe work practices and safety leadership. Lead safety committees and employee-engagement initiatives designed to strengthen the facility's safety culture. Oversee industrial hygiene monitoring related to noise, air quality, and chemical exposure and implement appropriate controls. Lead investigations of accidents, incidents, and near misses using Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and ensure sustainable corrective actions are implemented. Track and report key safety metrics, including TRIR, lost-time injuries, leading indicators, and corrective-action completion . Develop, maintain, and test emergency action and response plans. Coordinate with fire, medical, and other external emergency-response resources when necessary. Research technical and regulatory information related to equipment safeguards, process changes, and evolving safety requirements. Partner closely with plant leadership, production, maintenance, engineering, HR, and other departments to proactively identify and reduce operational risk. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field . 5+ years of progressive safety/EHS experience , preferably within heavy manufacturing, continuous-process manufacturing, or a paper/pulp mill environment. Strong knowledge of OSHA General Industry standards and applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Experience developing and managing LOTO, confined-space, fall-protection, hot-work, and other high-risk safety programs. Demonstrated experience conducting incident investigations and Root Cause Analysis. Experience developing and delivering safety training to hourly employees, supervisors, and leadership. Strong understanding of workers' compensation procedures and liability management. Excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills. Proven ability to influence behavior, coach employees and leaders, and build engagement around safety expectations. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in a paper mill, pulp and paper, converting, or similar continuous-process manufacturing operation . Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) . Experience with Process Safety Management (PSM). Industrial hygiene experience. Experience supporting safety programs in facilities with large production and maintenance workforces. The successful candidate will be a visible, hands-on safety leader who is comfortable walking the production floor, identifying risks, coaching employees, partnering with operations, and holding the organization accountable to high safety standards. This individual should be able to build credibility with both hourly employees and plant leadership while balancing regulatory compliance with the realities of a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Physical Demands & Working Conditions This position requires a combination of office work and significant time within an active manufacturing environment. Candidates must be comfortable walking and climbing throughout the facility and working around moving machinery and moderate industrial noise. The position may occasionally require lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds. The Safety Manager must also be available for after-hours calls and site response in the event of a serious incident or emergency.
