Overview We are an employee-owned company that works on high-profile union projects in NYC and Long Island. We are a union-only steel erection contractor. We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Safety Director to lead safety initiatives within a union-based construction environment. This pivotal role involves developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive safety programs that ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. As the Safety Director, you will champion a culture of safety, proactively identify risks, and foster teamwork to uphold the highest standards of occupational health and construction site safety. Your leadership will be instrumental in safeguarding our workforce while promoting operational excellence across all projects. Duties Lead and oversee J.C. Steel Erectors' corporate safety program across all company operations and active projects. Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve company safety policies, procedures, programs, and standards. Provide leadership, direction, and oversight to project-level safety personnel. Conduct regular jobsite inspections, safety audits, and performance reviews. Identify unsafe conditions, operational risks, recurring issues, and safety trends and implement appropriate corrective actions. Ensure compliance with applicable OSHA, New York State, NYC Department of Buildings, general contractor, client, and project-specific safety requirements. Oversee safety related to structural steel erection, precast erection, fall protection, cranes, rigging, hoisting, welding, decking, material handling, and other high-risk construction operations. Review project-specific safety plans, erection plans, lift plans, JHAs/JSAs, and related safety documentation. Participate in preconstruction planning to identify hazards and establish appropriate controls before work begins. Develop and oversee safety orientations, training programs, toolbox talks, and continuing safety education. Ensure employee and supervisor certifications, qualifications, training, and documentation remain current. Lead investigations involving injuries, incidents, near misses, property damage, and other safety-related events. Perform root-cause analyses and implement corrective and preventive actions. Oversee OSHA logs, incident records, inspection reports, training records, and other required safety documentation. Establish, monitor, and report company-wide safety metrics and key performance indicators. Provide executive leadership with regular reporting regarding safety performance, trends, risks, and areas for improvement. Represent J.C. Steel Erectors during client safety meetings, general contractor meetings, audits, inspections, and regulatory interactions. Work directly with project managers, superintendents, foremen, and field personnel to integrate safety into daily operations and project planning. Coordinate with insurance carriers, brokers, consultants, and other risk-management partners as required. Exercise stop-work authority when an imminent or unacceptable safety hazard exists. Promote a company-wide culture of safety, accountability, communication, and continuous improvement. Requirements Successful completion of the OSHA #500 Trainer Course in OSHA Standards for Construction. Extensive progressive construction safety experience. Significant experience in a construction safety leadership, management, or supervisory position. Experience overseeing safety across multiple active construction projects and field teams. Strong working knowledge of OSHA construction standards and regulations. Strong understanding of safety requirements related to structural steel erection and other high-risk construction operations. Strong knowledge of fall protection, cranes, rigging, hoisting, and related construction hazards. Experience conducting jobsite inspections, safety audits, incident investigations, risk assessments, and root-cause analyses. Proven leadership and decision-making ability. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to effectively work with executives, project managers, superintendents, foremen, union tradespeople, general contractors, clients, and regulatory personnel. Valid driver's license. Ability and willingness to regularly travel to active jobsites throughout New York City, Long Island, and the surrounding metropolitan area. Preferred Qualifications Structural steel erection experience. Precast concrete erection experience. Ironworking experience. Crane, rigging, and hoisting experience. Extensive New York City construction experience. Experience working with union construction trades. Strong knowledge of NYC Department of Buildings construction safety requirements. Certified Safety Professional (CSP). Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST). NYC Site Safety Manager, Site Safety Coordinator, or other applicable NYC safety credentials. Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field. Experience developing or managing a corporate safety department. Experience working with major New York general contractors and construction managers. $80,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
