This is not a desk-only management position. The FSQA Manager must maintain a strong presence on the production floor, develop a thorough understanding of our equipment and processes, and work directly with Production, Sanitation, Maintenance, and other departments to ensure that food safety and quality standards are consistently followed. The ideal candidate will have direct USDA protein-processing experience and expert-level knowledge of USDA regulations and HACCP programs. These qualifications are required. The FSQA Manager will be responsible for maintaining regulatory compliance, supporting daily operations, leading the facility's FSQA team, and promoting a culture in which food safety and product quality are shared responsibilities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Maintain a visible, hands-on presence throughout the production and sanitation areas. Learn and understand the facility's products, processes, equipment, production flow, food safety risks, and quality requirements. Develop, implement, maintain, and reassess the facility's HACCP plans, hazard analyses, prerequisite programs, and supporting documentation. Ensure compliance with
USDA-FSIS
regulations and all applicable federal, state, customer, and company requirements. Serve as the facility's primary contact for USDA inspection personnel and respond promptly and professionally to regulatory questions, findings, and concerns. Oversee the implementation and ongoing compliance of SSOPs, GMPs, sanitation programs, allergen controls, foreign-material controls, environmental monitoring, product-traceability, and recall programs. Review production and food safety records for accuracy, completeness, and compliance. Monitor production activities and conduct routine inspections to verify that employees and processes comply with established food safety and quality procedures. Evaluate deviations, nonconformances, and food safety concerns; determine appropriate product disposition and initiate corrective and preventive actions. Lead investigations involving regulatory findings, customer complaints, product holds, food safety incidents, and quality concerns. Identify root causes and work with the appropriate departments to implement effective, sustainable corrective actions. Manage product-hold and release procedures and ensure affected products are properly identified, controlled, documented, and dispositioned. Prepare for and lead USDA, customer, third-party certification, and internal audits. Maintain audit readiness and ensure timely completion of corrective actions resulting from audits or inspections. Lead mock recalls and traceability exercises and verify the effectiveness of the facility's recall procedures. Partner closely with Production, Sanitation, Maintenance, Warehouse, Supply Chain, and Human Resources to resolve issues without compromising food safety or product quality. Supervise, train, coach, and develop FSQA employees while establishing clear expectations and accountability. Provide food safety, HACCP, GMP, sanitation, and quality training to employees and management. Analyze food safety and quality trends and recommend improvements to processes, procedures, training, and controls. Provide FSQA support during production, sanitation, start-up, shutdown, and other critical operational activities. Perform other related duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Direct food safety and quality assurance experience within a USDA-regulated meat, poultry, or other protein-processing facility. Expert knowledge of
USDA-FSIS
regulations and regulatory requirements applicable to protein manufacturing. Expert knowledge of HACCP principles, program development, implementation, validation, verification, reassessment, and recordkeeping. HACCP certification. Strong working knowledge of SSOPs, GMPs, sanitation controls, allergen management, product traceability, recalls, corrective actions, and preventive controls. Experience working directly with USDA inspection personnel. Experience managing regulatory, customer, and third-party audits. Demonstrated ability to investigate food safety and quality issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement effective corrective actions. Previous leadership or supervisory experience within an FSQA department. Ability and willingness to spend significant time on the production floor and become fully familiar with facility operations. Strong written, verbal, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and respond to urgent operational or regulatory issues. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and electronic food safety or quality-management systems. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Animal Science, Microbiology, Biology, or a related field. Experience with BRCGS, SQF, or another GFSI-recognized certification program. Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) certification. Bilingual English and Spanish skills are preferred but not required. Experience with ready-to-eat or further-processed protein products, if applicable. Work Environment and Physical Requirements This is an on-site, hands-on position requiring regular presence in production, warehouse, sanitation, and refrigerated areas. Must be able to work in cold, wet, and fast-paced manufacturing environments while wearing required personal protective equipment. Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods and move throughout the production facility. Must be available to support operations outside normal business hours when food safety, regulatory, sanitation, or production needs require it. Flexibility to work across shifts may be required. We are looking for a practical, knowledgeable FSQA leader who is comfortable working directly on the production floor and understands that effective food safety management requires involvement in daily operations. If you have strong USDA protein experience, extensive HACCP expertise, and the ability to lead through collaboration and accountability, we encourage you to apply.
