Job Description

Waste Services

VLS Waste Services provides customized waste processing solutions for hazardous and non-hazardous industrial and commercial waste, including landfill diversion and sustainability programs, solidification of liquid waste, recycling, wastewater treatment, and waste sequestration.

Railcar Services

VLS Railcar Cleaning and Repair Services division provides specialty cleaning services for difficult-to-clean products, including chemicals, hardened materials, and pressurized gases, and comprehensive repair services for certified full-service repairs, tank car qualifications, and maintenance.

Marine Services

VLS Marine Services division offers state-of-the-art barge cleaning, repair, and gas-free facilities for various chemical solvents and downstream petroleum products.

VLS is seeking a Health and Safety Specialist supports the organization in identifying, managing, and reducing workplace risks to ensure a safe, compliant, and healthy environment for all employees. This role involves hands-on work in monitoring safety practices, conducting inspections, supporting incident investigations, and delivering training. Working closely with managers, employees, and the Health and Safety Manager, the specialist ensures that safety procedures are followed and continuously improved.

Job Duties:
  • Facilitate safety orientation and on-boarding requirements for new hire employees.
  • Facilitate annual OSHA regulatory and VLS safety essentials training.
  • Facilitate site and equipment specific safety training at the safety managers request.
  • Assist in injury care management to ensure employees receive the proper at occupational clinics.
  • Maintain all health and safety documentation.
  • Monitor OSHA and
CAL/OSHA

regulations changes and ensure VLS site locations meet all applicable requirements.

  • Facilitate and perform emergency drills at site location.
  • Report all incidents and injuries in the VLS ecompliance incident reporting database.
  • Utilize SDS online system to ensure sites have an updated chemical inventory.
  • Perform safety inspections to identify hazardous conditions, recommend corrective actions, and ensure safety equipment is in proper working order.
  • Lead, improve, and enforce compliance for all health and safety requirements, programs, policies, and procedures (company, federal, state, regional, and local).
  • Participate in local safety committee meetings.
  • Participate in SCAT Incident investigations to identify root cause and provide corrective actions.
  • Conduct safety meetings, toolbox meetings when necessary.
  • Perform Job Hazard Analysis for all operational work task to eliminate and mitigate job hazards.
  • Perform risk assessments for all operational work tasks to identify and eliminate and mitigate risk.
  • Perform workplace hazard and PPE assessments to determine the proper PPE for job tasks.
  • Develop and implement OSHA required site plans.
  • Be on call 24 hours 7 days a week in the event of emergencies.
Requirements:
  • Preferred Associate or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety or related field. In lieu of degree (1-3 years) work experience in the safety field coupled with relevant professional certifications.
  • One to three years' experience in the Health & Safety field with preferable experience in maritime & industrial operations.
  • General knowledge of applicable OSHA, state, and local rules and regulations for the areas in which we operate.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to successfully complete preemployment drug & alcohol screen, preemployment physical examination, and background check upon receiving an offer of employment.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and driving history satisfactory with VLS Recovery Services standards, and its insurer.
  • Ability to travel to satisfy the requirements of the position.
