Job Description
Under the direction of the Director II of Safety and Student Support or designee, the Lead Safety Assistant serves as a District Office-based position responsible for supporting and coordinating safety operations across all District schools. The incumbent supports the planning, organizing, and monitoring of the daily activities of School Safety Assistants, including overtime scheduling, call-out tracking, and deployment of mobile safety staff. This position serves as the District's primary liaison to law enforcement, probation, and emergency response agencies, maintains the District's safety incident log, and ensures compliance with District, state, and federal safety mandates. The Lead Safety Assistant also coordinates home visits, leads mediations, supports the development of operational safety plans for major events, and ensures timely response to alarm system notifications.

Provides high-quality customer service to District staff, students, families, vendors, and community members by fostering a welcoming, solution-oriented, and culturally responsive District office environment; responds to phone calls, visitors, and electronic communications in a timely manner with a sense of urgency and professionalism; listens to understand stakeholder needs, provides accurate information or directs inquiries to the appropriate department, and follows through to ensure resolution; models respectful, clear, and confidential communication; and ensures that all interactions reflect the District's commitment to student success, accessibility, and family and community engagement. E Supports coordination of District-wide safety operations and staff assignments; schedules overtime as authorized and in accordance with union contract provisions, tracks call-outs, and ensures coverage across multiple school sites. E Provides lead direction, training, and technical guidance to School Safety Assistants and mobile safety unit staff. E Serves as the District liaison to law enforcement, probation, fire, and emergency response agencies; assists in investigations and coordinates the exchange of safety-related information. E Maintains and updates the District's safety and incident log including workplace violence; reviews, compiles, and analyzes data to identify trends and recommend corrective action. E Leads and participates in conflict resolution and mediation processes involving students, parents, and staff. E Conducts and coordinates home visits with site administrators or designees to address safety, truancy, and welfare concerns. E Conducts investigations of incidents involving theft, vandalism, or safety concerns and prepares written reports. E Bags and tags confiscated drugs, weapons, and paraphernalia and transfers evidence to law enforcement in compliance with District procedures. E Responds to alarm system calls, coordinates with security or law enforcement personnel, and ensures incident follow-up documentation. E Supports the development and implementation of operational safety plans for District-wide and site-based events such as athletic contests, graduations, and assemblies. E Provides staff training on crisis prevention, de-escalation, and emergency response protocols; assists with coordinating District-wide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid training. E Monitors adherence to District protocols for lockdown, evacuation, and emergency communication. E Collaborates with administrators, counselors, and school staff District-wide to maintain a safe and positive environment conducive to learning. E Monitors safety equipment and coordinates repair, replacement, or installation as needed. E Participates in the development and implementation of department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures under administrative direction; develops desk manuals; actively participates in team projects; leads projects and meetings, as assigned. E Perform other related duties as assigned that are appropriate within the professional capacity of the Lead Safety Assistant classification.

The Lead Safety Assistant differs from the School Safety Assistant classification in scope, responsibility, and level of independence. While School Safety Assistants perform site-based security, supervision, and crime prevention duties under the direction of a principal or site administrator, the Lead Safety Assistant functions as the District's central operational safety coordinator. The Lead Safety Assistant is responsible for supporting the planning, organizing, and monitoring District-wide safety operations, including the assignment of staff, overtime scheduling, and call-out tracking to ensure adequate coverage across multiple school sites. The incumbent provides technical guidance and field leadership to School Safety Assistants and mobile safety teams, serving as the primary liaison to law enforcement, probation, and emergency response agencies. The Lead Safety Assistant oversees the maintenance of the District's safety and incident logs, prepares statistical reports, and leads or assists in investigations involving theft, vandalism, weapons, or other serious incidents. The incumbent also leads mediation and home visit efforts in collaboration with site administrators, coordinates operational safety plans for large-scale District and community events, and ensures the secure collection and lawful surrender of confiscated drugs, weapons, and paraphernalia. The Lead is expected to exercise a high degree of professional judgment and discretion within established protocols, respond to after-hours emergencies and alarm activations, and support the consistent implementation of safety protocols, crisis response, and preventive measures across all District schools. The Lead Safety Assistant classification does not include authority to hire, discipline, evaluate, or independently determine terms and conditions of employment for classified staff.
