Administrative Support / Secretary Internship Part - Time What You Can Expect As a Health & Safety Intern, you'll support the team responsible for utility operations serving the University of Iowa campus and healthcare facilities. These operations provide essential services including steam, electricity, chilled water, and water. Working alongside the Site Safety Specialist and experienced utility professionals, you'll gain hands-on exposure to health and safety practices across power generation, electrical systems, water treatment, maintenance, and capital projects. Through meaningful projects and real-world experience, you'll help support a culture of safety while developing skills that can prepare you for a career in health and safety, engineering, utilities, or related fields. What You'll Do Support implementation of ENGIE's Health & Safety Program across campus utility operations serving the University of Iowa
Participate in safety inspections, audits, hazard assessments, leadership safety walks, and corrective action activities
Assist with incident investigations, Good Catch reporting, follow-up actions, and lessons learned to support continuous improvement
Support employee safety training, meeting preparation, program documentation, and maintenance of health and safety records
Collaborate with operations, maintenance, engineering, capital project, and corporate safety teams to identify and mitigate risks
Gain experience using ENGIE systems and business tools, including GPI, SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and safety reporting platforms
Conduct health and safety risk assessments and provide support for capital improvement and operational projects
Demonstrate proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices while working in plant and utility environments
Complete a safety improvement project focused on reducing risk, enhancing compliance, or strengthening ENGIE's positive safety culture What You'll Bring Currently enrolled at the University of Iowa and pursuing a bachelor's degree in occupational and environmental health, safety, engineering, environmental science, public health, business administration, or a related field
Interest in health and safety, utility operations, engineering, power generation, water treatment, or other technical and operational environments
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other business productivity tools
Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally across multiple functions and organizational levels
Demonstrated organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to maintain accurate records and documentation
Ability to learn new systems, processes, and technical concepts while adapting to a dynamic work environment
Self-motivated with the ability to manage assignments independently while contributing effectively as part of a team
Commitment to safety and willingness to work in industrial and utility environments while utilizing required PPE
Ability to participate in site walks and field activities that may require standing, walking, climbing stairs, and navigating active operational areas Additional Details This internship is based onsite at ENGIE's University of Iowa campus utility operations in Iowa City, IA. The internship will begin September 8, 2026, and conclude December 31, 2026. Interns may work up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session and up to 40 hours per week during academic breaks
Applicants must be enrolled at the University of Iowa and in good academic standing at the start of the internship
Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
This role includes both office and field-based work and may require exposure to varying industrial environments, and elevated noise levels
Must be able to recognize and respond to audible alarms, equipment operating conditions, and portable radio communications
Ability to frequently stand, walk, sit, balance, kneel, climb stairs and ladders, navigate catwalks and ramps, and perform repetitive motions as required
Ability to push, pull, and lift materials or equipment consistent with job responsibilities
Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, hard hat, safety footwear, fall protection equipment, and respiratory protection as necessary
Compensation Hourly Range:
$23.00 USD hourly This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.
