An effective Construction Safety Officer is a trusted leader who leads by example and treats every team member with fairness, consistency, and respect. This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, thoroughness, accuracy, sound judgment, and the ability to consistently apply safety standards and company policies. The Construction Safety Officer will organize and conduct both planned and spontaneous jobsite visits and inspections; identify and address potential hazards; investigate incidents and accidents; provide safety training and education; and work closely with project teams, field personnel, subcontractors, and management to maintain compliance with applicable safety regulations, industry standards, client requirements, and company policies. The successful candidate will be proactive, approachable, and committed to creating an environment where every team member understands that safety is a shared responsibility and that everyone goes home safe at the end of every workday. Key Responsibilities Conduct routine and spontaneous jobsite inspections and safety audits to identify unsafe conditions, behaviors, and work practices that could result in violations of company or client safety requirements or cause injury, illness, or property damage. Enforce project safety plans, company policies, and applicable occupational health and safety regulations. Perform and document job hazard analyses, risk assessments, and pre-task safety reviews. Lead toolbox talks, new-hire orientations, emergency drills, and other safety training sessions. Monitor high-risk activities, including work at heights, excavation, confined-space entry, lifting operations, hot work, electrical work, and equipment operation. Verify that employees and subcontractors use required personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow approved safe-work procedures. Review permits, certifications, inspection records, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and subcontractor safety documentation. Investigate injuries, near misses, property damage, and environmental incidents; determine root causes and recommend appropriate corrective and preventive actions. Maintain accurate safety records, inspection reports, incident logs, training records, and regulatory documentation. Track corrective actions and verify that identified hazards are addressed within required time frames. Coordinate with project managers, supervisors, subcontractors, and field personnel to improve safety performance and resolve safety concerns. Exercise stop-work authority when an activity or condition presents an immediate danger to employees, subcontractors, clients, or the public. Support emergency preparedness, first-aid response, and return-to-work procedures. Participate in project planning and coordination meetings and advise management and project teams regarding safety requirements and potential risks. Promote a proactive safety culture through coaching, communication, education, accountability, and a visible field presence. Serve as a resource and safety advocate for employees, encouraging open communication and prompt reporting of hazards, incidents, and safety concerns. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. An associate's or bachelor's degree in occupational safety, construction management, engineering, or a related field is preferred. Three or more years of construction field experience . Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety regulations, construction practices, hazard recognition, and incident-investigation methods. First Aid, CPR, and AED certification preferred, or required within a specified period after hire. OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification required or preferred, depending on company requirements. Additional certifications such as MSHA, Confined Space, Confined Space Entry and Rescue/Recovery, Fall Protection, Competent Person, or other applicable safety certifications are preferred. Strong observation, communication, training, documentation, organizational, and problem-solving skills. Ability to interpret safety regulations, project plans, specifications, safe-work procedures, and technical documents. Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office applications and electronic safety-management systems. Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple responsibilities, and make sound decisions in the field. Valid driver's license and ability to travel between job sites as required. Physical and Work Requirements Ability to walk and stand for extended periods on active construction sites. Ability to climb ladders and stairs and safely navigate uneven, elevated, confined, dusty, muddy, or noisy work areas. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds , subject to applicable workplace requirements. Ability and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions while wearing required PPE. Ability to work around construction equipment, vehicles, machinery, excavation areas, and other active jobsite hazards while following established safety procedures. Availability for early starts, overtime, weekends, nights, or emergency response when project conditions require it. Ability to travel between company and project locations as needed. Consistent and fair enforcement of safety expectations across all employees, subcontractors, and project locations. Development and maintenance of a proactive, positive, and accountable safety culture. Field Experience & Leadership Ideally, the successful candidate will have hands-on experience working in the field and a solid understanding of the type of construction work performed by our company . We are looking for someone who understands the realities of the jobsite because they have been there and have performed this type of work themselves. This position is not limited to observing from the sidelines. At times, the Construction Safety Officer will be expected to get in the "trenches" with the team , using their field experience and safety knowledge to help determine the safest and most effective way to complete challenging work. The right person will be able to recognize when a situation presents an unusual or difficult safety challenge and work alongside the project team to develop practical solutions. This may include helping the team engineer around a difficult condition, identifying a safer method of performing the work, or assisting with the development of a plan that allows the job to move forward safely and efficiently. We believe the ability to provide this level of guidance comes from having performed the work firsthand . The ideal candidate will have the practical knowledge, credibility, and experience to earn the trust of field personnel and be viewed as a resource—not simply an enforcer of rules.
