Under the direction of the Health Officer, the Environmental Health Specialist is responsible for providing environmental health services within Sullivan County.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Answers telephone and greets office visitors, providing information and assistance, taking messages, and/or transferring/directing to appropriate individual or department
• Pollution control including onsite sewage system permitting, inspection, and education
• Vector control program oversight and administration
• Education of community regarding environmental health including but not limited to on-site sewage rules, lead exposure prevention, vector-borne disease prevention, food-borne illness, best food practices, and food plan reviews to meet compliance with the Indiana Food Code
• Food protection including food establishment permitting, inspection, and education
• Performs or coordinates lead environmental assessments and site inspections
• Coordinates office training with Indiana State Department of Health and other resources
• Participates in local emergency planning and disaster preparedness and response
• Swimming pool/spa inspections and complaints
• Responds to tattoo, body piercing, and eyelash extension complaints and performs inspections
• Education of community regarding public health
• Performs all other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

• Public health training and experience
• Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science or public health preferred
• Knowledge of building codes and construction experience
• Education in building codes or public environmental health
• Valid driver's license and transportation availability to perform job duties
• Good interpersonal communication skills
• Ability to complete duties in a timely manner
• Computer skills, database experience and accurate data entry skills required

PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS

The Environmental Health Specialist works with other county employees, political groups, the Indiana Department of Health and the general public when providing environmental health services to prevent and/or respond to environmental concerns within the community.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Environmental Health Specialist is exposed to health and physical concerns normally associated with environmental health for the general public, on-site sewage projects, and retail food establishments including lifting up to forty pounds, bending, kneeling, and sewage.
