Job Summary We are seeking an Assistant Safety Lead to support the Northeast Fisheries Observer Program (NEFOP). In this role, you will work closely with the FMO Safety Lead to ensure observer coverage safety standards across regional commercial fisheries from Maine to North Carolina. You will play a vital role in executing observer safety training, managing safety equipment, maintaining compliance with National Observer Program Safety Training Standards, and supporting emergency response operations.

Key Responsibilities Training & Instruction:

Co-teach observer safety courses, schedule pool time and vessels, lead in-water exercises, develop training materials (quizzes, workshops, exams), and evaluate observer performance.

Safety Equipment & Oversight:

Monitor EPIRB Visual Inspection Cards (EVIC) and inReach devices. Coordinate life raft repacking, servicing, delivery, and pickup.

Field & At-Sea Duties:

Deploy on shadow trips, trip trainer trips, and priority/probation data quality trips as needed. Investigate new safety gear with the USCG.

Emergency & Incident Response:

Serve as an inReach point-of-contact, participate in after-hours on-call safety rotations, follow up on safety incident reports, and assist with Emergency Action Plan (EAP) updates.

Committees & Administrative Support:

Serve as an active member on the NMFS Safety Advisory Committee (SAC) and assist with Safety Working-group Advisory Team (SWAT) meetings, data tracking, and web portal documentation.

Minimum Qualifications Education:

B.S. degree in Marine Biology, Fisheries, or a related field.

Experience:

At least one (1) year of relevant experience working with marine fisheries information programs or science-based programs.

Technical Skills:

Proficiency in SQL, Oracle (or other relational databases), GIS, and statistical software. Proficient in MS Office and G Suite applications. Familiarity with UNIX-based computers and network systems.

Core Competencies:

Strong written/verbal communication, program planning, performance metric development, conflict resolution, and ability to perform at-sea observer duties. Preferred:

Previous NEFOP observer experience, small boat operator background, or commercial fishing experience.

Pay:

$64,000.00 - $68,000.00 per year
