Job Title:
Safety Specialist Job Description The Safety Specialist leads and manages environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs in a regulated manufacturing environment, with a strong focus on Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements. This role develops, implements, and maintains EHS policies and procedures, ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA, and GMP regulations, and drives continuous improvement to strengthen safety culture and reduce incidents across laboratories, cleanrooms, manufacturing floors, and storage areas. Responsibilities Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive EHS programs, policies, and procedures aligned with OSHA, EPA, and GMP requirements. Monitor and assess compliance with all applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations as well as internal standards and procedures. Support and lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance safety culture, reduce incidents, and improve overall EHS performance. Conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), risk assessments, and safety audits across laboratories, cleanrooms, manufacturing areas, and storage spaces. Identify chemical, biological, ergonomic, and process-related hazards and implement effective mitigation and control strategies. Lead or support Management of Change (MOC) activities to evaluate and manage EHS impacts associated with process, equipment, or facility changes. Lead incident investigations for near-misses, injuries, and environmental events to determine root causes and contributing factors. Develop, implement, and track corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to closure, ensuring timely and sustainable resolution of issues. Maintain accurate EHS records, documentation, and reports, and regularly communicate safety metrics and trends to leadership. Oversee hazardous waste management, including proper storage, labeling, handling, and disposal in accordance with regulatory standards. Manage environmental permits and required reporting for air, water, and waste, and coordinate regulatory submissions as needed. Ensure compliance with chemical inventory systems and maintain accurate and up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Design, develop, and deliver EHS training programs, including topics such as Hazard Communication, personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency response. Conduct EHS-related new hire onboarding and recurring compliance training for employees and relevant personnel. Promote a proactive safety culture through engagement initiatives, participation in safety committees, and visible EHS leadership. Perform internal EHS audits and inspections to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement. Participate in external regulatory inspections and audits, providing documentation, explanations, and follow-up actions as required. Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies, including OSHA, EPA, and local authorities, to support inspections, inquiries, and compliance activities. Maintain inspection readiness for GMP and EHS compliance audits across the site. Ensure adherence to GMP requirements that impact safety and contamination control in regulated manufacturing and cleanroom environments. Support cleanroom safety practices, environmental monitoring, and contamination prevention activities. Partner with Quality and Validation teams to integrate safety considerations into processes, equipment qualification, and regulated operations. Support safety of operators working with chemicals on the manufacturing floor and in cleanroom areas, including appropriate controls and training. Monitor environmental compliance in manufacturing areas such as cleanrooms and cold storage areas to ensure conditions meet regulatory and internal standards. Essential Skills Demonstrated experience managing or supporting EHS programs in a regulated manufacturing environment. Hands-on experience with GMP requirements, particularly as they relate to safety and contamination control in pharmaceutical or similarly regulated industries. Practical experience with general safety on the manufacturing floor and within cleanroom environments. Experience supporting the safety of operators working with chemicals, including appropriate handling, storage, and control measures. Experience conducting incident investigations and supporting the resolution of issues that occur on the manufacturing floor. Knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations and their application in manufacturing and laboratory settings. Ability to conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), risk assessments, and safety audits across diverse operational areas. Experience overseeing hazardous waste management, including storage, labeling, and disposal in compliance with regulations. Familiarity with environmental compliance in manufacturing areas, including cleanrooms and cold storage environments. Ability to design and deliver EHS training programs, including GMP-related safety training. Strong skills in developing and tracking corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to closure. Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Quality and Validation, in a regulated environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills for reporting safety metrics and interacting with regulatory agencies. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills for maintaining accurate EHS records and documentation. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment, or in another regulated manufacturing setting with GMP exposure. Experience managing environmental permits and regulatory reporting for air, water, and waste. Experience serving as a liaison with regulatory agencies such as OSHA, EPA, and local authorities. Experience supporting cleanroom safety, environmental monitoring, and contamination prevention programs. Experience participating in external regulatory inspections and maintaining inspection readiness. Background in environmental, health, and safety, pharmaceutical sciences, engineering, or a related discipline. Interest in contributing to a growing organization and supporting new safety initiatives under a refreshed site leadership team. Work Environment This role is fully on site, working five days per week, Monday through Friday, in a regulated manufacturing facility in Wilson, NC. The position primarily operates within laboratories, cleanrooms, manufacturing floors, and cold storage areas, where strict GMP, EHS, and contamination control standards apply. Work may occasionally be required on weekends, depending on workload and operational needs. The environment involves regular interaction with production equipment, chemical handling areas, and controlled environments that require adherence to site safety rules and appropriate personal protective equipment. The role collaborates closely with operations, quality, validation, and leadership teams in a setting that is investing in new safety initiatives and continuous improvement under new site leadership. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wilson, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $36.00 - $42.00/hr.
