Full-Time | Flexible Schedule Based on Operational Needs Position Summary The Sanitation Manager is responsible for overseeing daily sanitation activities and ensuring that facility and production areas are maintained according to established sanitation, GMP, food safety, and company standards. This position will manage sanitation programs, cleaning procedures, sanitation schedules, chemical management, pre-operational inspections, sanitation documentation, and employee training. The Sanitation Manager will work closely with production and quality teams to identify sanitation concerns, address deficiencies, and support a clean, safe, and sanitary manufacturing environment. Essential Responsibilities 1. Sanitation Operations Oversee daily sanitation activities throughout the manufacturing facility. Ensure sanitation activities are completed according to established procedures and schedules. Maintain sanitation schedules for production areas, equipment, utensils, floors, walls, drains, storage areas, and other facility areas. Verify that cleaning and sanitation activities are completed effectively. Identify sanitation deficiencies and ensure appropriate follow-up. Monitor the overall cleanliness and sanitary condition of the facility. Identify opportunities to improve sanitation effectiveness and efficiency. 2. GMP and Food Safety Ensure sanitation activities support applicable GMP and food safety requirements. Maintain a sanitary manufacturing environment designed to prevent product contamination. Monitor sanitation practices related to equipment, food-contact surfaces, employee hygiene, and facility conditions. Identify potential biological, chemical, and physical contamination risks. Work with Quality and Production to address sanitation-related concerns. Support internal, customer, third-party, and regulatory audits as needed. Escalate significant sanitation or food safety concerns to appropriate management. 3. SSOPs and Cleaning Procedures Create, review, update, and maintain Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs). Develop and maintain cleaning procedures for production equipment and facility areas. Establish appropriate cleaning methods, frequencies, sequences, tools, chemicals, concentrations, temperatures, contact times, and rinsing procedures. Ensure sanitation procedures clearly define the appropriate cleaning and sanitizing methods. Review and update procedures when equipment, products, chemicals, or processes change. Ensure procedures are practical, effective, and consistently followed. 4. Chemical Management Manage the proper selection, storage, labeling, handling, dilution, and use of sanitation chemicals. Maintain appropriate chemical inventories. Ensure chemicals are properly labeled and stored. Ensure chemicals are appropriately separated from food, ingredients, packaging, and incompatible materials. Ensure Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available and accessible. Monitor chemical concentrations and proper chemical usage. Ensure appropriate PPE is used when handling chemicals. Address chemical-related concerns in coordination with appropriate company personnel. 5. Sanitation Equipment and Tools Oversee the proper use, cleaning, storage, and condition of sanitation equipment and tools. Ensure sanitation equipment and tools are appropriate for food manufacturing environments. Establish procedures for cleaning and sanitizing sanitation tools and equipment. Inspect sanitation equipment and tools for damage, contamination, wear, or improper use. Coordinate maintenance needs when sanitation equipment requires repair. Ensure sanitation tools are properly identified, organized, and stored to prevent cross-contamination. 6. Pre-Operational Inspections Establish and oversee pre-operational sanitation inspections. Verify that production equipment and areas are properly cleaned and sanitized before production begins. Identify and document sanitation deficiencies. Coordinate follow-up on deficiencies before equipment or areas are released for production when required. Work with Quality personnel to support appropriate verification and release procedures. 7. Team Leadership and Training Supervise and provide direction to sanitation employees. Establish clear expectations for sanitation performance. Provide initial and ongoing training related to: GMPs Food safety Sanitation procedures SSOPs Chemical handling PPE Chemical safety Equipment cleaning Cross-contamination prevention Personal hygiene Documentation Monitor employee performance and provide coaching when necessary. Promote consistent adherence to sanitation procedures. Maintain appropriate sanitation training records. 8. Documentation and Records Ensure sanitation records are completed accurately and on time. Maintain sanitation schedules, checklists, inspection records, chemical logs, training records, corrective action records, and verification documentation. Review documentation for accuracy and completeness. Follow up on documentation discrepancies. Maintain organized and audit-ready sanitation records. 9. Communication and Coordination Work closely with Production, Quality, Maintenance, Warehouse, Safety, and other operational functions as needed. Coordinate sanitation activities with production schedules and operational requirements. Communicate sanitation concerns that may affect food safety, product quality, production, or facility operations. Maintain clear and timely communication with management and other departments. Support cross-functional efforts to resolve sanitation and facility-related issues. 10. Corrective Actions and Continuous Improvement Identify recurring sanitation issues and assist in determining root causes. Develop and implement corrective actions as appropriate. Monitor the effectiveness of corrective actions. Identify opportunities to improve cleaning efficiency, chemical usage, labor utilization, equipment performance, and sanitation effectiveness. Support food safety and continuous improvement initiatives. Establish and monitor sanitation performance standards and KPIs. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Preferred Associate or Bachelor's degree in Food Science, Food Safety, Biology, Chemistry, Operations, or a related field. Experience in a food manufacturing environment subject to regulatory, customer, or third-party audits. Experience with HACCP, Preventive Controls, or similar food safety programs. Experience with sanitation verification programs. Experience with environmental monitoring. Bilingual English/Spanish skills. Work Environment and Schedule Position is based in a food manufacturing facility and requires frequent presence in production and sanitation areas. Flexibility to work varying shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime, may be required based on operational needs.
