UPMC is seeking a Mental Health Safety Specialist I to support a safe, therapeutic environment for patients in behavioral health and medical settings. In this role, you will monitor patient safety, assist with crisis prevention and de-escalation, support treatment plans, and collaborate with nurses, clinicians, and security. Responsibilities include observing high-risk patients, documenting behavior, assisting with safe transports, and following safety and restraint protocols while modeling UPMC's mission-driven, patient-focused and culturally sensitive care standards. Responsibilities Continuously monitor and observe behavioral health and high-risk patients to ensure safety Recognize and respond to escalating behaviors using approved de-escalation techniques Assist clinical staff in implementing care and safety plans for assigned patients Document observations, safety checks, and incidents accurately in clinical systems Support safe patient transport within the facility following safety protocols Collaborate with nursing, providers, and security to maintain a therapeutic environment Follow UPMC policies for restraints, elopement prevention, and suicide precautions Participate in required safety, CPI, and clinical trainings to maintain competencies Communicate clearly with patients, families, and staff using trauma-informed approaches Report safety hazards and contribute to continuous improvement in patient safety Required Skills Behavioral health observation Crisis de-escalation Verbal intervention techniques Patient safety monitoring Incident documentation Basic vital sign monitoring Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) methods or equivalent Team communication in clinical settings Safe patient transport EMR/clinical documentation systems
