About Us:
We are a growing long-haul trucking company operating Class A commercial vehicles across the nation. Safety is our top priority, and we're looking for a dedicated Safety Specialist to help coach our drivers, maintain compliance, and support our safety programs using cutting-edge tools like the Motive platform.
Job Summary:
The Safety Specialist will focus on promoting defensive driving habits, reducing risky behaviors, and ensuring our drivers meet high safety standards. This role combines remote coaching via our Motive e-log/safety platform, phone-based counseling, in-person road tests, and general safety support. Ideal for someone with trucking industry experience who enjoys working directly with drivers to improve performance and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
Monitor driver performance and provide coaching/counseling through the Motive safety platform to reinforce positive defensive driving behaviors and address/minimize risky driving events (e.g., harsh braking, speeding, distractions). Conduct phone coaching sessions with drivers for specific safety incidents or patterns identified in the system. Perform road tests for new drivers during orientation and annual evaluations for existing drivers to assess and maintain driving skills. Collaborate with the recruiting department to gather and verify required documents for Driver Qualification Files (DQFs) to ensure full compliance. Inspect and maintain first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment at office and shop facilities, ensuring they are up-to-date and properly stocked. Assist the safety department with additional tasks as needed, including supporting safety audits, training initiatives, or compliance activities. Stay current on relevant
DOT/FMCSA
regulations and best practices in fleet safety.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in safety, transportation, or related field preferred. Previous experience in trucking safety, fleet management, driver training, or a similar role strongly preferred (e.g., safety coordinator, driver trainer, or compliance specialist in transportation). Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs) and driver safety platforms (Motive experience a big plus). Knowledge of
DOT/FMCSA
regulations, including driver qualification requirements, hours of service, and safety compliance. Strong communication skills for coaching drivers via phone, platform messaging, and in-person interactions. Valid driver's license required; Class A CDL preferred (or willingness to obtain). Comfortable conducting vehicle road tests and working in a shop/office environment. Detail-oriented with good organizational skills for managing files, inspections, and follow-ups. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Skills:
Experience reviewing telematics/safety data and providing constructive feedback. Background in defensive driving training or behavior-based safety programs. Basic knowledge of workplace safety equipment maintenance (first aid, fire safety).
