Job Description
Primary Purpose
To support the vision, mission, and strategic priorities of ESC Region 12 by providing direct technical assistance and training to regional school districts. The School Safety Specialist ensures districts are operationally prepared to prevent, respond to, and recover from emergencies through the rigorous application of state safety standards, facility audits, and evidence-based training programs.
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience
Experience in public education
At least 3 years of relevant experience
Special Knowledge/Skills
Comprehensive knowledge of Texas school safety legislation (e.g., SB 11, HB 3), Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) standards, the Texas Education Agency Office of School Safety's mandates, and general school emergency response.
Proficiency in conducting physical facility audits and vulnerability assessments to identify security gaps.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; proven ability to deliver effective presentations to diverse groups (educators, law enforcement, and stakeholders).
Highly organized self-starter able to coordinate complex projects and manage program logistics through proactive problem-solving.
Ability to research/interpret complex policies and translate data into actionable insights using advanced software (spreadsheets and word processing).
A collaborative team player committed to a positive workplace culture and continuous improvement through Quality Management System (QMS) initiatives.
General Responsibilities
Facilitate regional professional development to support coordinated school safety.
Act as a functional link between school administrators and local emergency responders (law enforcement, fire, and EMS).
Oversee and coordinate state-mandated safety audits, ensuring accurate and timely submission of documentation to the TxSSC and TEA.
Conduct on-site facility inspections and provide data-driven recommendations to support school safety.
Assist districts in identifying and utilizing safety-related grant funding and legislative allocations.
Support school safety collaboratives to foster communication and resource sharing among regional safety officers.
Stay current on emerging trends in safety technology, mental health support, and legislative changes.
Manage data collection for regional safety trends and training metrics for reporting to ESC 12 leadership and state agencies.
Dedicated to continuous personal and professional growth, including attending required professional development to remain a subject matter expert in the field.

Benefit Information
ESC Region 12 provides monetary contributions up to $575 per month to use for employee/family healthcare and supplemental benefits.
An employee earns state personal, sick and vacation leave.
All employees contribute to both: Teachers Retirement System (TRS) and Social Security retirement programs
