$40 - $55 Safety Specialist - Mission Critical Construction Position Summary A leading construction organization is seeking a Safety Specialist to support mission-critical construction projects in Washington, D.C. The Safety Specialist will help implement and maintain project safety programs while providing a visible safety presence in the field. This position is responsible for conducting jobsite inspections, identifying and addressing hazards, monitoring compliance with regulatory and project requirements, and promoting safe work practices among employees and contractors. The Safety Specialist will work closely with Project Management, Superintendents, Safety Managers, subcontractors, and field personnel to ensure safety expectations are clearly communicated and consistently followed. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in an active construction environment, has strong attention to detail, and can effectively identify potential hazards and communicate corrective actions. Key Responsibilities Implement and enforce site-specific safety programs, policies, procedures, and project requirements. Conduct routine jobsite inspections, safety audits, and observations to identify hazards and unsafe work practices. Monitor construction activities for compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, project requirements, and applicable safety standards. Identify unsafe conditions and behaviors and communicate corrective actions to field personnel and project leadership. Maintain a consistent safety presence throughout active construction areas. Support the development and implementation of corrective action plans and follow up to ensure issues are properly addressed. Ensure proper use of PPE and compliance with site-specific safety requirements. Participate in daily safety activities, including toolbox talks, safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and pre-task planning. Assist with new employee and subcontractor safety orientations and safety training. Review and support Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), permits, and other safety documentation. Assist project teams with planning for high-risk activities and ensure appropriate safety controls are in place before work begins. Monitor subcontractor safety performance and communicate deficiencies to project and safety leadership. Support incident and near-miss investigations by gathering information, documenting findings, and assisting with corrective actions. Maintain accurate safety records, inspection reports, incident documentation, training records, and other required project documentation. Track safety observations, inspections, incidents, and other project safety metrics. Communicate safety expectations clearly and professionally with employees, subcontractors, and project leadership. Promote employee engagement and encourage the reporting of hazards, near misses, and safety concerns. Assist Safety Managers and project leadership with maintaining a strong, proactive safety culture. Perform other safety-related duties as assigned. Requirements 2+ years of construction safety experience required. Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or a related field preferred, but not required. Experience working in an active construction or mission-critical environment preferred. OSHA 30 certification required, or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe. OSHA 10 certification may be considered depending on experience. Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and general construction safety practices. Experience conducting jobsite inspections, safety observations, audits, or hazard assessments. Ability to identify hazards and effectively communicate corrective actions. Experience with safety documentation, reporting, and recordkeeping. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with field personnel, subcontractors, and project leadership. Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively as part of a project safety team. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to prioritize multiple safety-related tasks in a fast-paced construction environment. Must be comfortable working in an active construction environment. Valid driver's license required. Physical & Work Environment Requirements Work is performed in both office settings and active construction jobsites. Frequently moves throughout construction sites to inspect work areas, observe activities, and identify potential hazards. Must be comfortable working around active construction equipment, electrical systems, elevated work areas, and other jobsite hazards. Occasionally ascends/descends ladders and traverses uneven or unfinished surfaces. Frequently bends, kneels, crouches, reaches, and positions oneself to conduct inspections and observe work activities. Must be able to visually identify and assess potential safety hazards in varying work environments. May occasionally lift, carry, or transport safety equipment and materials. Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions and varying temperatures. Operates a computer and other office equipment for documentation, reporting, and communication. Frequently communicates with employees, subcontractors, vendors, and project leadership in person and through electronic communication. Ability to travel between job sites as required; occasional overnight travel may be required. Must be able to wear required PPE and work safely in an active construction environment.
