•Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Professionals will be compensated basic salary plus 10% for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present.

L&I's Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) is looking for a Construction Safety Technical Specialist to join our Technical Services team. This is a highly visible, externally facing role for someone who knows construction, understands workplace safety, and is comfortable working with people. You'll provide technical expertise to DOSH staff, employers, employees, industry groups, and other stakeholders and help shape the safety standards and policies that protect Washington workers. If you can walk onto a construction job site, understand what you're seeing, talk comfortably with the people doing the work, and translate safety requirements into practical solutions, this could be the role for you. This position can be offered with a flexible schedule (4/10's, 9/80's, 5/8's etc.) once fully trained and approved by management. This position is mostly teleworking with occasional travel to meetings, conferences, and field visits with other DOSH employees. The assigned duty can be at any of our Western WA L&I locations up and down the I5 corridor.

50 Years of DOSH What You'll Do As the Construction Safety Technical Specialist, you'll serve as a technical resource for construction safety and health issues. You'll work with both residential and commercial construction and provide expertise to DOSH staff, employers, employees, industry groups, and other stakeholders.

Your work will include:

Researching construction safety and health rules and recommending changes, clarifications, and proactive compliance strategies. Providing technical support to DOSH compliance and consultation staff on complex safety issues and investigations, including serious injuries, fatalities, and catastrophes. Applying and interpreting DOSH (Division of Occupational Safety and Health), OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), ANSI (American National Standards Institute), and other applicable construction standards. Making independent decisions about rules interpretation and application. Advising employers and employees on practical approaches to hazard correction and prevention, personal protective equipment, accident prevention programs, and other safety concerns. Reviewing citations and Notices of Violation for consistency with applicable laws, policies, and interpretations. Researching emerging hazards and helping develop new policies, procedures, and safety requirements. Reviewing variance requests and making recommendations. Representing L&I and DOSH at conferences, industry events, committees, the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals, and the Washington State Legislature. Developing and delivering training, workshops, seminars, and presentations for employers, employees, apprentices, internal staff, and others. Explaining construction safety requirements and complex technical information in a way that makes sense to the people who need to use it. Building productive working relationships with industry, agency partners, and internal teams. And other impactful work that supports our mission. Bring Your Construction Experience We're looking for someone who understands that construction safety is more than knowing what a regulation says. You understand how the work actually gets done. Experience working directly in the construction industry, construction operations, field supervision, project work, safety, or a related hands-on environment is highly valuable. We want someone who can connect technical requirements to what is actually happening on a job site. You may have experience with areas such as: Fall protection Scaffolds Roofing Trenching and excavation Demolition Masonry Flagging and traffic control Residential construction Commercial construction Construction equipment and operations Jobsite safety Safety programs and hazard identification Fire-Resistant Materials Applicator Certification What We're Looking For We're looking for someone who brings construction knowledge, sound judgment, strong communication skills, and a solution-oriented approach. You'll be successful in this role if you: Have hands-on or operational experience in the construction industry and understand how the work actually gets done. Are confident communicating with a wide range of people and can build rapport quickly. Can explain complex safety requirements clearly, whether you're talking one-on-one or presenting to a large group. Are comfortable making decisions, standing behind your recommendations, and explaining your reasoning. Look for practical solutions instead of simply identifying problems. Take initiative, work independently, and know when to bring others into the conversation. Are curious and willing to keep learning as construction practices, hazards, and safety requirements evolve. Can work effectively as part of a team while also being comfortable working independently.

REQUIRED

One to two years of demonstrated experience in the following areas: Conducting research Analyzing policies, laws, rules, or regulations Developing and implementing policies and procedures A valid and unrestricted driver's license The ability to take action to learn and grow - Demonstrates initiative and accountability in pursuing opportunities for personal and professional development. Actively seeks feedback, acquires new knowledge or skills, and applies learning to improve performance and contribute to organizational success. The ability to take action to meet the needs of others - Demonstrates responsiveness and initiative in identifying, understanding, and addressing the needs of colleagues, stakeholders, and customers. Acts with empathy and accountability to provide timely support, resolve concerns, and deliver value that strengthens relationships and organizational outcomes.

And one of the following:

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or related field AND four years of paid occupational/industrial safety related professional experience OR A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or related field AND two years as an Occupational Safety and Health Professional 2 (OSHPRO2) in

DOSH. OR A

Master's Degree from an accredited university in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, or similar field AND two years of professional experience. OR Four years of full-time journey level experience in one or more of the following industries: Government, military, public health or related safety and health field.

•College-level education will substitute, year for year, for up to four years of non-safety and health experience.

•Additional safety and health qualifying experience will substitute year for year, for education.
