Job Description

Emergency Weather Shelter Security / Community Liaison Sierra Roots | Nevada County, CA $27-$30/hour | Seasonal | Part-time | Weather-dependent Important schedule note: This is a highly seasonal, weather-dependent and activation-based position.
Security / Community
Liaisons work on-site during shelter activations, with evening and overnight shifts available. About the Position When severe weather hits Nevada County, Sierra Roots creates a place of warmth and safety for vulnerable members of our community. This is a hands-on, highly visible role for someone who is observant, approachable and able to remain calm in unpredictable situations. Much of the work is relational. The right person genuinely enjoys engaging with people and helping them feel seen. The Security / Community Liaison helps maintain safety through presence while contributing to a welcoming environment for shelter guests, staff, neighbors and the surrounding community. This role combines situational awareness with trauma-informed engagement. We approach safety from a place of service rather than policing, emphasizing prevention, de-escalation and relationships while maintaining the ability to respond firmly when circumstances require it.
Security / Community
Liaisons work as part of the on-site shelter team under the direction of the Shelter Manager and alongside Shelter Monitors and volunteers. Essential Responsibilities Safety & Site Awareness Maintain a visible, calm and attentive presence throughout the shelter site, parking lot and surrounding areas. Identify and respond appropriately to behavioral, environmental or safety concerns before they escalate. Remain awake, alert and responsive throughout the entire assigned shift. De-escalation & Guest Interaction Use verbal de-escalation, trauma-informed communication and nonviolent approaches whenever possible. Engage shelter guests directly and respectfully while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries. Support clear shelter expectations while balancing safety, dignity and compassion. Community & Team Serve as a respectful point of contact for neighbors, community members and visitors around the shelter site. Participate in shift briefings and debriefings and communicate relevant observations between shifts. Document significant incidents or concerns clearly and accurately when required. Qualifications Required Reliable transportation and ability to reach the shelter during severe weather. Strong situational awareness and ability to remain calm and attentive during unpredictable or tense situations. Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with vulnerable community members. Ability to set appropriate boundaries and respond to conflict without unnecessarily escalating situations. Preferred Experience in shelter/outreach, human services, behavioral health, crisis response or community services. Experience with trauma-informed care, person-centered practices and de-escalation. CPR/First Aid and naloxone training. Who We're Looking For The right person is observant, grounded and genuinely comfortable working with people. Much of this role is relational: talking with shelter guests, building rapport, noticing when someone is struggling, and using trust, communication and presence to help prevent situations from escalating. You should be comfortable setting clear boundaries without becoming confrontational, engaging directly with people experiencing homelessness or crisis, and recognizing when someone needs support rather than enforcement. Strong candidates may come from peer support, social services, community work or other people-centered backgrounds. We are looking for someone who understands that a strong safety presence does not have to feel intimidating. At the EWS, safety is built through awareness, relationships, teamwork, de-escalation and the ability to respond firmly when circumstances require it. Schedule & Pay Evening Security /
