Job Description

This position is on-call status meaning hours/days assigned and hours per week and/or month will vary based on need for coverage. Shift times are dependent on building assignment. This position may rotate between the Polk County Administration Building and Polk County Riverplace. Shifts for each facility are below. Administration Building 7:00 am
  • 12:00 pm 12:00 pm
  • 5:00 pm Riverplace Building 7:15am
  • 12:15 pm 12:15 pm
  • 5:15 pm Under general supervision, performs routine security duties to maintain order and protect Polk County property, staff, and clients.
Provides information and assistance to the general public and assists with emergency operations, evacuation, and emergency medical situations as needed. Apprehends and/or detains individuals as provided by the State of Iowa statues and transfers individuals over to law enforcement personnel; notifies staff of potential high-risk situations; observes and reports incidents or suspicious activity. Provides information and responds to questions from individuals accessing the Polk County buildings; assists employees and the public in locating appropriate areas within the building; assists those needing additional assistance with accessing services; interacts with individuals in a courteous, respectful, and pleasant manner. Prepares and distributes duty forms and/or reports; reviews security videotapes recorded at Polk County buildings. Renders CPR, first aid, and summons medical personnel to Polk County buildings when appropriate; provides assistance and direction during potential and actual emergency situations including flood, fire, tornado, bomb threats, hazardous materials, riots, disturbances, etc. Performs related duties as required. Considerable knowledge of the civil rights of individuals. Excellent interpersonal skills. Proven ability/proficiency in safe use of firearms. Skill in the use of personal computers. Ability to exercise good judgment and decision-making skills in responding to situations. Ability to maintain composure during emergency and stressful situations. Ability to maintain public trust and put individuals at ease during stressful situations. Ability to use tact and minimal force when interacting with a disruptive or combative person. Ability to effectively deal with and deescalate confrontations. Ability to firmly and fairly enforce rules and regulations. Ability to interact effectively with all individuals in a respectful manner. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to remain visually and mentally alert in order to rapidly identify and respond to security problems and/or hazards and take immediate and appropriate action to intervene. Ability to hear audio alerts or alarms and conversational voice. Ability to operate protective equipment including but not limited to handcuffs, OC (mace), taser and an ASP (impact weapon). Ability to perform repetitive motions involving reaching head-to-toe, bending, twisting. Ability to stand on hard surfaces over 5 hours daily. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement, personnel, co-workers, and the general public, fostering a collaborative and professional work environment. Graduation from a Law Enforcement Academy, or similar training, or Any combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements:
CPR/AED and First Aid Certification is required within six months of hire. Candidate must have a permit to carry weapons in accordance with Chapter 724 of the Iowa Code. A criminal background check is required. A drug screen is required prior to final offer of employment. Graduation from a Law Enforcement Academy or prior law enforcement experience is preferred for this position.
