The Opportunity Intellectus Preparatory Charter School is seeking a reliable, observant, and student-centered Part-Time School Safety Associate to support the physical safety, security, and daily operations of our school community. The School Safety Associate will maintain a visible and professional presence throughout the building, monitor entrances and common areas, support arrival and dismissal procedures, respond appropriately to safety concerns, and work closely with school leadership to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for scholars, staff, families, and visitors. This position requires a current and valid New York State Security Guard Registration Card (Guard Card). The ideal candidate understands how to maintain firm boundaries and high expectations while interacting respectfully and appropriately with young people. This position requires strong judgment, situational awareness, professionalism, and the ability to remain calm and responsive in challenging situations. School Safety & Security Maintain a visible and active safety presence throughout assigned areas of the school building. Monitor the school's primary entrance and maintain controlled access to the building. Verify visitors and ensure compliance with established sign-in, identification, and visitor management procedures. Conduct regular walkthroughs of hallways, stairwells, entrances, exits, common areas, and the exterior perimeter. Monitor security cameras and other school safety systems as assigned. Identify and immediately report safety hazards, suspicious activity, unauthorized individuals, or other security concerns. Assist school leadership in maintaining secure entrances and exits throughout the school day. Respond promptly and appropriately to disturbances, emergencies, and other safety-related incidents. Contact or support communication with emergency services when directed or when circumstances require immediate emergency intervention. Assist with emergency drills, evacuations, lockdowns, and other school safety procedures. Complete incident reports and required safety documentation accurately and promptly. Scholar Arrival, Dismissal & Movement Support safe, orderly, and efficient scholar arrival and dismissal. Maintain an active safety presence during high-traffic transitions throughout the school day. Monitor scholar movement through hallways, stairwells, entrances, exits, and common spaces. Reinforce school expectations respectfully and consistently. Identify developing concerns and intervene appropriately before situations escalate. Work collaboratively with school leaders and staff when additional support is needed during transitions or scholar incidents. Scholar & Community Relationships Build respectful relationships with scholars while maintaining clear professional boundaries. Model calm, respectful, and responsible behavior in all interactions. Utilize verbal de-escalation and conflict-management strategies whenever appropriate. Understand the developmental needs of middle and high school scholars and respond to behavior without unnecessarily escalating situations. Welcome families and visitors professionally while consistently enforcing school safety and visitor procedures. Contribute to a school culture in which scholars experience safety, consistency, accountability, and care. Emergency Preparedness & Response Become thoroughly familiar with the school's safety plan, emergency procedures, evacuation routes, and communication protocols. Respond quickly and calmly during emergencies or potentially dangerous situations. Immediately notify appropriate school leadership of serious incidents, threats, or safety concerns. Assist in securing designated areas when directed during an emergency. Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive safety matters. Participate in required school safety training, emergency drills, and preparedness activities.
Required Qualifications Candidates must:
Possess a current and valid New York State Security Guard Registration Card (Guard Card) and remain properly registered throughout employment. Experience working with children in a school setting Have completed all New York State-required security guard training applicable to their registration. Maintain all required NYS security guard annual training and renewal requirements throughout employment. Provide documentation of current NYS Security Guard registration prior to employment. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Demonstrate strong situational awareness, judgment, and attention to detail. Be able to remain calm and exercise sound judgment during emergencies, conflicts, and high-pressure situations. Demonstrate strong verbal communication and conflict de-escalation skills. Be able to interact professionally with scholars, families, staff, visitors, and community members. Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and consistent attendance. Be able to stand and walk for extended periods and respond throughout the school building as necessary. Successfully complete all additional background checks, fingerprinting, clearances, and employment requirements applicable to working in a New York public charter school. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience in school safety, security, youth programming, law enforcement, military service, emergency response, or a related field. Previous experience working in a middle school or high school environment. Experience working directly with adolescents and families. Training or demonstrated experience in verbal de-escalation, crisis prevention, conflict resolution, or restorative practices. CPR, First Aid, AED, or other emergency-response certification. Schedule This is a part-time position with scheduling based on the operational needs of the school. Priority coverage may include scholar arrival, dismissal, high-traffic transition periods, school events, and other times identified by school leadership. Candidates should have flexibility to support occasional school events or activities outside of the regular school day when needed.
