$14.00 to $16.00 Position Summary The Security Officer provides unarmed security, access control, and visitor screening services at the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. The officer serves as the first point of contact for claimants, attorneys, witnesses, and state personnel entering the facility, and is responsible for maintaining a safe, orderly, and professional environment during administrative hearings. This is a public-facing post in a setting where visitors may be under stress. Composure, courtesy, and sound judgment are as essential to this role as physical presence. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Staff the assigned entry/lobby post during all scheduled hours; maintain visible, professional presence. Screen all visitors and their belongings using a handheld metal detector (wanding) in accordance with contract screening protocols.
Control access to the facility:
verify appointments, direct visitors to hearing rooms, issue and collect visitor passes as required. Identify and secure prohibited items; follow established procedures for refusal of entry and for surrendering/storing items. Monitor lobby, waiting areas, corridors, and hearing room entrances for disruptive or suspicious activity. De-escalate verbal conflicts and disruptive behavior; summon local law enforcement when a situation exceeds the officer's authority. Respond to medical emergencies, fire alarms, evacuations, and other incidents per site emergency procedures. Complete and submit Daily Activity Reports (DARs), incident reports, visitor logs, and wanding/screening logs accurately and on time. Conduct opening and closing security checks of the assigned area, including doors, entrances, and unattended spaces. Escort staff, hearing officers, or visitors within the facility when requested. Report all safety hazards, equipment failures, and security deficiencies to the Site Supervisor immediately. Maintain strict confidentiality regarding hearings, claimants, case information, and any personally identifiable or protected information observed on post. Comply with all NPS post orders, the NPS Employee Handbook, and all Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and DHS site requirements. Perform other duties as assigned by the Site Supervisor or NPS management. Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED equivalent. Legally authorized to work in the United States. Valid government-issued photo identification; valid driver's license preferred. Successful completion of a criminal background investigation, including Pennsylvania State Police criminal history and FBI fingerprint-based check, plus any additional clearances required by the Commonwealth for this contract. Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to complete written reports and communicate with the public. Professional appearance and adherence to the NPS uniform and grooming standards. Reliable transportation and a demonstrated record of punctuality and attendance. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in contract security, law enforcement, corrections, or military service. Prior experience with magnetometer or handheld wand screening at a courthouse, government building, hospital, or similar controlled-access facility. Experience working in behavioral health, social services, or other settings serving vulnerable populations. Current CPR/First Aid certification. Verbal de-escalation or crisis intervention training. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout an 8.5-hour shift. Ability to operate handheld screening equipment and perform bag inspections. Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Sufficient vision and hearing to observe activity, monitor entrances, and respond to alarms and verbal communication. Ability to respond quickly on foot in an emergency. Work Environment Indoor state government office setting with regular public contact. The officer will interact with individuals who may be frustrated, distressed, or agitated. Occasional exposure to verbal confrontation. This is an unarmed post; officers are not permitted to carry firearms or other weapons on site.
