Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY
Performs responsible civilian detention support work involving the operation of detention center control rooms, electronic security systems, surveillance equipment, inmate property intake and release, and related detention support functions. Employees in this position are responsible for monitoring facility security systems, controlling inmate movement through electronic access systems, maintaining accurate records, and safeguarding inmate property in accordance with established policies and procedures. Work is performed under the supervision of a Detention Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, or other designated supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This job description is intended to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by employees assigned to this classification. Employees may be required to perform additional related duties as assigned. Operates and monitors detention center control room systems, including electronic door controls, surveillance cameras, intercom systems, alarms, and communication equipment. Continuously monitors inmate housing units, common areas, entrances, exits, and other secure locations through video surveillance systems. Controls and documents inmate movement throughout the facility utilizing electronic security and access control systems. Responds appropriately to emergency alarms, security alerts, radio traffic, and requests for assistance in accordance with established procedures. Maintains constant awareness of facility activities and promptly reports security concerns, suspicious behavior, equipment malfunctions, or policy violations to supervisory personnel. Receives, inventories, secures, stores, and releases inmate personal property in accordance with detention center policies and procedures. Completes property intake documentation and maintains accurate records regarding inmate property, valuables, and evidence transfers. Verifies inmate identity and authorization prior to releasing property upon discharge, transfer, or court order. Participates in audits and inspections of property storage areas to ensure accountability and compliance with established procedures. Maintains computerized records, logs, reports, and documentation related to security operations, inmate movement, and property transactions. Monitors facility communications systems and relays information to detention staff, supervisors, emergency responders, and other authorized personnel. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive inmate, criminal justice, and personnel information. Assists with detention center administrative and operational support functions as assigned. Must be available to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-outs as required to support 24-hour detention operations. Essential employees may be required to work during declared emergencies, severe weather events, or natural disasters.
REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must successfully complete all detention center training required for civilian detention support personnel. Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining access to criminal justice information systems (CJIS) as required. Must successfully pass all required background investigations and security clearances.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of detention center security procedures and facility operations. Knowledge of electronic security systems, surveillance equipment, access control systems, and communication devices. Ability to monitor multiple security systems simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail. Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to security concerns and emergency situations. Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports using computerized systems. Ability to operate computers, detention management software, security monitoring systems, and office equipment. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions within established policies and procedures. Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, law enforcement personnel, court officials, inmates, and the public. Ability to remain calm and professional during stressful situations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience High school diploma or GED required. Previous experience in security monitoring, dispatching, corrections support, customer service, records management, property control, communications, administrative support, or a related field preferred. Experience operating computerized systems and maintaining detailed records preferred. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to sit, stand, walk, and perform assigned duties for extended periods. Ability to observe multiple video monitors and read computer screens for prolonged periods. Ability to hear and communicate effectively through radios, telephones, and intercom systems. Ability to lift and carry inmate property and other materials weighing up to 30 pounds. Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations within the facility when required. Ability to maintain alertness and concentration during extended shifts.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily within a secure detention facility environment, including control rooms, property storage areas, intake and release areas, and administrative offices. Employees may be exposed to stressful situations, loud noise, disruptive individuals, and occasional contact with inmates. Work requires strict adherence to security procedures and confidentiality standards.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the direct supervision of assigned supervisory detention personnel, including Corporals, Sergeants, Lieutenants, or other designated command staff.

$37,385.00 - $42,409.00 per year
