Job Duties What You'll Do:
The Bureau of Health Improvement and Wellness's Violence and Injury Prevention section is seeking a detail‑oriented, data‑driven Epidemiology Investigator 2 to support ongoing injury and self‑harm surveillance efforts. This role plays a vital part in analyzing statewide injury data, supporting public health decision‑making, and contributing to prevention strategies that improve the health and safety of Ohioans.
Job duties include:
Conduct epidemiological investigations and analyze injury and self‑harm data using statistical software such as SAS, ensuring accurate interpretation of trends and health outcomes. Design and implement data collection tools, surveys, assessment instruments, and research methods to support high‑quality surveillance activities. Prepare clear and informative data products, including reports, briefs, factsheets, presentations, and website updates for internal and external audiences. Perform data validation, quality assurance, and improvement projects to strengthen surveillance accuracy and consistency. Support CDC grant requirements by preparing data submissions, indicator reports, and other deliverables tied to injury and self‑harm surveillance. Calculate statewide injury and violence rates, generate projections, and analyze trends using state and national datasets. Collaborate with public health partners to strengthen reporting systems, provide technical assistance, and represent the program at meetings, trainings, or conferences. Respond to data requests, coordinate with other state agencies and stakeholders, and contribute to shared data initiatives.
Unusual Working Conditions:
May require travel May be away from home and normal work site up to 30 days during emergencies May be exposed to contagious and communicable diseases and toxic or hazardous chemicals Normal working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm. This is an hourly position, with a pay range of 32 on the OCSEA Pay Range Schedule.
EDUCATIONAL TRANSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS
Official educational transcripts are required for all post-high school educational accomplishments, coursework or degrees claimed on the application. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Completion of graduate core program in public health or preventive medicine; AND 3 courses or 9 months' experience in the use of statistical computer software packages; AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in epidemiology; AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in physiology; AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in statistics; AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in human relations; AND 1 course or 3 mos. exp. in interviewing; AND 6 mos. exp. working in research or specific laboratory identifying or researching infectious or chronic diseases &/or related environmental health problems; AND Must be able to provide own transportation. OR 6 months' experience as an Epidemiology Investigator 1 (65761) with the State of Ohio; AND Must be able to provide own transportation. Applications of those who meet the minimum qualifications will be further evaluated against the following criteria: Graduate or advanced degree in public health or preventive medicine Four or more graduate courses in epidemiology, statistics, and/or statistical software Experience with managing and analyzing large datasets Experience in statistical analysis of health-related data (e.g., SAS, R, REDCap) Experience using database and/or spreadsheet software (e.g., Access, Excel) Experience creating tables, figures, graphs, charts displaying health related data Experience creating technical reports that communicate health related data Experience working with health agencies or research organizations All eligible applications shall be reviewed considering the following criteria: qualifications, experience, education and active disciplinary record.

Unless required by legislation, the selected candidate will begin at Pay Grade 32, Step 1 of the union (OCSEA) Pay Range Schedule ($31.47/hr.), with an opportunity for pay increase after six months ($32.84/hr.) of satisfactory performance and then a yearly raise thereafter.
