ABOUT THE POSITION

New Light Investigations LLC is seeking an experienced Private Investigator to conduct complex criminal investigations and litigation support involving Connecticut state and federal criminal cases. This is a part-time, 1099 independent contractor position with assignments provided on an as-needed basis. There is no guaranteed number of hours or cases. Assignments will be based on experience, availability, geographic coverage, performance, and the investigator's ability to responsibly manage active casework. The investigator must be capable of independently reviewing extensive case materials, identifying inconsistencies and investigative leads, conducting detailed witness interviews, performing scene investigations, and preparing thorough, professional reports for attorneys. Many assignments involve serious criminal allegations and may include disturbing, graphic, or highly sensitive evidence. Investigators must be prepared to professionally review materials such as crime scene photographs, video evidence, autopsy or medical records, recorded statements, and other sensitive discovery while maintaining objectivity, discretion, and professionalism. The successful candidate must possess strong investigative judgment, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work independently on sensitive and often complex criminal matters with limited supervision. This is not an entry-level investigative position.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Review and analyze police reports, arrest warrants, affidavits, witness statements, recorded interviews, photographs, video, forensic reports, laboratory reports, court filings, transcripts, and other discovery related to state and federal criminal matters. Review large and complex discovery productions to identify significant facts, inconsistencies, evidentiary issues, investigative gaps, potential witnesses, and additional leads. Develop case timelines and compare witness accounts, police reports, physical evidence, digital evidence, forensic materials, and other available documentation. Work closely with defense counsel to understand case objectives, develop investigative strategies, and pursue relevant investigative leads. Review applicable state and federal criminal statutes, under the direction of counsel, to better understand the factual issues associated with the charges and the elements the prosecution must establish. Locate, identify, and conduct detailed interviews of witnesses, complainants, subjects, and other individuals who may possess relevant information. Conduct follow-up interviews and obtain written or recorded statements when appropriate and authorized. Conduct crime scene and incident location investigations, including photographing, measuring, documenting, and evaluating relevant conditions. Identify potential sources of evidence, including surveillance video, photographs, electronic information, business records, public records, social media, and other documentation. Conduct legally permissible Internet, social media, open-source intelligence, background, public-record, courthouse, municipal, state, federal agency, and field research. Examine relationships and connections involving individuals, businesses, vehicles, addresses, telephone numbers, social media accounts, and other relevant investigative information. Identify information that may corroborate or contradict witness statements, police reports, affidavits, federal investigative reports, or other discovery. Conduct stationary and mobile surveillance when necessary and obtain professional-quality photographic and video documentation. Maintain accurate investigative notes and properly preserve, organize, label, and submit photographs, video, audio recordings, documents, and other investigative materials. Prepare clear, detailed, and objective investigative reports and summaries identifying significant findings, inconsistencies, corroborating information, unresolved issues, and additional areas requiring investigation. Assist counsel with investigative preparation for hearings, motions, trial, witness examinations, sentencing proceedings, and other litigation-related matters. Complete assignments within established deadlines, communicate significant developments promptly, and maintain strict confidentiality regarding all case information and investigative materials.

NATURE OF THE CASELOAD

The criminal matters handled by New Light Investigations LLC may range from routine criminal investigations to serious and highly complex state and federal prosecutions. Certain assignments may involve allegations or evidence relating to serious violent crimes, sexual offenses, crimes involving children or vulnerable individuals, homicide, firearms offenses, narcotics investigations, organized criminal activity, financial crimes, conspiracy allegations, and other serious felony or federal offenses. Applicants should understand that some assignments may involve highly disturbing factual allegations and graphic evidentiary materials. The investigator must remain professional, objective, discreet, and focused on the investigative assignment regardless of the nature of the allegations. The investigator's responsibility is to gather, verify, analyze, and accurately document facts. Investigators are not expected to determine guilt or innocence and must approach every assignment objectively.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Substantial prior professional investigative experience. Demonstrated ability to independently investigate complex criminal cases, while maintaining communication with assigned Case Manager. Strong experience reviewing police reports, witness statements, discovery materials, and other investigative records. Familiarity with criminal investigative procedures at the state and/or federal level is preferred. Strong interviewing skills and the ability to communicate effectively with cooperative, reluctant, or difficult witnesses while maintaining professionalism. Excellent analytical skills and the ability to identify inconsistencies, patterns, relationships, investigative gaps, and potential evidentiary issues. Strong written communication skills and the ability to prepare detailed, accurate, objective, and professionally written investigative reports. Ability to accurately document investigative activity in chronological and sequential detail. Strong attention to detail. Ability to manage multiple investigative assignments and competing deadlines. Ability to realistically evaluate personal caseload capacity and communicate promptly when additional assignments could affect the quality or timely completion of existing casework. Ability to prioritize investigative leads and determine appropriate next investigative steps within the scope of the assignment. Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in the field. High degree of integrity, discretion, professionalism, reliability, and dependability. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding highly sensitive criminal and legal matters. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and general computer-based investigative systems. Ability to function effectively in a digital technology environment and learn web-based case-management and investigative platforms. Proficiency conducting Internet, public-record, and social media research. Ability to upload and securely transmit reports, photographs, video evidence, recordings, discovery materials, and other investigative information. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving history. Ability and willingness to travel throughout Connecticut and occasionally within a multi-state coverage area. Ability to work irregular hours when required by a particular investigation, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional holidays. Ability to successfully complete all required criminal background screening. Must meet all applicable requirements to perform investigative work under a properly licensed private investigation firm in the jurisdiction where the assignment is conducted.

AT A MINIMUM, THE INVESTIGATOR MUST HAVE

A current, reliable, and up-to-date laptop computer capable of efficiently reviewing large discovery files, photographs, video evidence, electronic records, and other digital case materials. A laptop capable of running current versions of Microsoft Word and other commonly used business and investigative applications. Reliable high-speed Internet access for receiving assignments, reviewing digital discovery, conducting research, uploading reports, and securely transmitting investigative materials. A reliable smartphone with email, Internet, photographic, video, navigation, and communication capabilities. Professional-quality digital photography and video equipment appropriate for investigative fieldwork and surveillance. Video equipment capable of producing clear and steady video documentation, with accurate date and time settings when required. Adequate memory cards, storage devices, batteries, chargers, and related equipment necessary to conduct extended investigative assignments without interruption. A reliable, properly registered, insured, and well-maintained vehicle suitable for investigative work and surveillance. A vehicle with legally compliant window tinting appropriate for maintaining discretion during stationary surveillance and other covert investigative assignments. Appropriate navigation capabilities and the ability to travel to unfamiliar locations as required. Investigators are expected to maintain their equipment in good working condition and ensure their technology, cameras, recording equipment, and computer systems remain sufficiently current to meet the demands of professional investigative assignments. The investigator must be capable of securely storing and protecting confidential case information, discovery materials, reports, photographs, video evidence, recordings, and other sensitive investigative information maintained on personally owned equipment.

PREFERRED BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE

Preference will be given to investigators with substantial experience in one or more of the following areas: Criminal defense investigations at the state and federal level Serious felony investigations Criminal litigation support Witness interviews and witness development Discovery and case-file analysis Background and public-record investigations Social media and open-source intelligence investigations Locate investigations Surveillance and covert field investigations Trial preparation and attorney litigation support Bilingual or multilingual ability is a plus, particularly the ability to conduct witness interviews and field investigations in Spanish.

EDUCATION

An Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, or a related discipline is preferred. Significant professional investigative experience may be considered in lieu of formal educational credentials.

INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR, PART-TIME ASSIGNMENT STRUCTURE

This is a part-time, 1099 independent contractor opportunity. It is not a full-time salaried position, and investigative assignments are not guaranteed. Cases are assigned on an as-needed basis according to the operational needs of New Light Investigations LLC and the investigator's qualifications, experience, availability, geographic coverage, current workload, and demonstrated ability to successfully manage assigned matters. Investigators may advise the company regarding their current availability and the number of active cases they can reasonably handle. Case assignments will be made with consideration for the investigator's existing workload and the complexity and anticipated demands of each matter. An investigator who accepts a case is expected to assume responsibility for completing the assigned investigative work professionally, thoroughly, and within established deadlines. Investigators should not accept additional assignments when doing so could compromise the quality, timeliness, or thoroughness of existing casework. The number of cases assigned to an investigator may increase or decrease depending upon available case volume, the investigator's availability, the complexity of individual matters, performance, responsiveness, and the investigator's demonstrated ability to manage multiple investigations effectively. Because this is an independent contractor position, there is no guarantee of a minimum number of assignments, hours, or ongoing case volume. Criminal investigations may require time-sensitive witness contact, scheduled interviews, travel, scene investigations, evening or weekend fieldwork, or other investigative activity based upon the requirements of the individual case.
