Job Title:
Leak Inspector Job Description The Leak Inspector performs field-based inspections of utility-owned gas meters and related facilities to help prevent gas leaks and ensure public safety. This entry-level role combines customer interaction, mechanical aptitude, and detailed documentation while working independently in the field across a defined utility territory. Responsibilities Perform periodic facility inspections and surveys on utility-owned gas meters and related equipment at customer locations. Conduct integrity surveys, including direct assessments and close interval surveys, to identify and prevent potential gas leaks. Complete all required documentation accurately and on time, using both paper forms and a handheld tablet. Ensure all readings, records, and inspection data comply with company procedures and regulatory requirements. Support the successful completion of regulatory audits and inspections by maintaining accurate, organized records. Perform audit reviews with operations teams and provide support during internal and external audits. Interface professionally with customers in their homes, clearly explaining the purpose of inspections and the work being performed. Communicate and coordinate with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, contractors, and other stakeholders as needed. Follow all safety protocols and procedures during field work, including the proper use of gas detection equipment and personal protective equipment. Participate fully in required training, including classroom instruction, homework, practice exams, and certification testing. Demonstrate the ability to complete inspections using provided tools and technology during job shadowing and probationary evaluation periods. Report daily to the assigned job site or meeting location, obtain the daily route from the tablet, and manage the inspection schedule with minimal supervision. Walk several miles per day, climb stairs and ladders, and work outdoors in all weather conditions for the duration of the workday. Communicate promptly with supervision regarding attendance, schedule changes, or any issues encountered in the field. Essential Skills Valid state driver's license and reliable vehicle, with at least 1 year of driving experience. Ability to work on your feet for an 8-hour workday, including walking several miles per day, climbing stairs and ladders, and working in all weather conditions. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to speak clearly and explain the job to customers in their homes. High school diploma or equivalent. Basic to intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and manage daily routes and tasks. Strong interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor when interacting with customers and stakeholders. Ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and effectively as part of a team. Demonstrated intermediate knowledge of mathematics and algebra, along with mechanical aptitude. High level of reliability and professionalism, including consistent job history and the ability to meet attendance and performance expectations. Customer service orientation, with the ability to provide a positive experience during home visits. Comfort with inspection and general labor tasks in a field-based environment. Ability to follow structured training, complete homework and practice exams on personal time, and successfully pass required certification exams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in mechanically oriented roles such as cable technician, HVAC, piping, or auto mechanic is a plus, though the position is entry-level. Experience in inspection, construction, or general labor environments. Experience in roles requiring direct customer interaction and service delivery. Ability to interface with technical services, government agencies, emergency planning committees, emergency responders, landowners, and contractors. Strong initiative, with the ability to be self-sufficient throughout the workday and manage a daily route independently. Comfort using handheld tablets and digital tools to receive routes and record inspection results. Willingness to participate in a structured, multi-week training and certification process, including probationary evaluation. Ability to adapt to changing field conditions, schedules, and priorities within the utility territory. Why Work Here? Work Environment This is a 100% field-based position that requires daily travel within the assigned utility territory, with regular tailboard meetings held at warehouse locations in Hartford and New Haven. Standard operating hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with optional Saturday shifts available at supervisory request and at the contractor's discretion. A typical day involves reporting to the job site, receiving a list of addresses and route on a handheld tablet, and working independently in the field for the remainder of the day. The role requires extensive walking, climbing stairs and ladders, and working outdoors in all weather conditions. A simple tool set and safety equipment are provided, including a flashlight, gas detector, field binder for paperwork, ID badges, tools and tool belt, handheld tablet, flame-resistant shirts and pants, safety vest, and hard hat. The environment is safety-focused and structured, Day 1 OSHA and orientation training, followed by classroom training in Week 1 with a set schedule, scenario-based learning, homework, and practice exams that must be completed on personal time. Week 2 includes certification testing with multiple attempts, followed by several days of job shadowing in the field for hands-on learning. In Week 3, competency is evaluated based on the ability to complete inspections using the provided tools, with outcomes that may include independent work, additional training, or separation. The first 90 days serve as a probationary period, during which performance, reliability, and adherence to training and safety standards are closely monitored. Communication regarding attendance and scheduling is expected to be proactive and professional. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Watertown, CT. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
