LUMCON-Graduate Student Intern LUMCON is a program of the Louisiana Board of Regents serving as a statewide academic and research Consortium representing over 40 universities and colleges across Louisiana. LUMCON's mission is to promote, facilitate and conduct research and education collaborations among Louisiana's universities in marine and coastal sciences relevant to the sustainability of coastal and marine environments of the U.S. Gulf Coast. LUMCON provides unparalleled opportunities in coastal, marine, and oceanographic science and education to the research community and public alike. Anchored by a first-rate marine laboratory, the DeFelice Marine Center, LUMCON is embedded in Louisiana's dynamic wetland environment and conveniently located on a gateway to the open waters of the Gulf. LUMCON operates a world-class fleet of research vessels unmatched on the US Gulf Coast. In 2023, LUMCON expanded its programs through the opening of a maritime research and outreach facility (Blue Works) on the Maritime Campus in Houma. In 2025, a large boat slip and bulkhead project was completed on the Maritime Campus. We recently held the ground breaking for a new Marine Operations Center that will open in 2027 and a keel-laying for the state's new flagship, 125-foot R/V Pelican II , which will also be delivered in 2027.POSITION OVERVIEW
The Benthic Ecology Lab (archerbenthicecologylab.com) at Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) is seeking two Graduate Student Interns for a period of up to 3 months. The successful applicants will gain research experience with freshwater sponge biology and environmental chemistry. The selected individuals will work on a study assessing whether or not freshwater sponges serve as effective indicators of metal pollution within the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary (BTNE). The positions will include field work around the BTNE area and lab work at LUMCON and in collaborator's laboratories at University of New Orleans and Baton Rouge Community College. This position is available for up to 30 hours per week with a total of 250 hours available over the course of the internship.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Be enrolled as a full-time graduate student at a Louisiana-based institution in Biology, Oceanography, or a closely related discipline Experience with field work Comfortable working in and around the water Competent with computers Competent in a lab environment Comfortable with a microscope Detail oriented Have a valid Driver's LicensePREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Works well both as part of a team and independentlyESSENTIAL DUTIES
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited the following: Survey sponges in freshwater and brackish systems from shore Collect water and sediment for chemical analysis Transport samples between LUMCON, University of New Orleans, and Baton Rouge Community College Data entry Assist with quality assurance for data Assist in processing samples in the laboratory Identify sponge samples Participate in lab meetingsHOW TO APPLY
