Job Description
This isn't a job for someone who needs hand-holding. Lomar Machine & Tool is looking for a seasoned Machine Builder who can walk up to a set of blueprints, pick up the right tools, and build something precise, functional, and built to last. As our top-level build role, the Machine Builder II is the backbone of our custom assembly operation — the person our team looks to when the job gets complex. About Lomar Machine & Tool We engineer and build custom specialty machinery to exacting customer specifications. Every machine that leaves our floor is one-of-a-kind — designed for a specific application, built by skilled hands, and held to a high standard. Our Machine Builder IIs are central to making that happen. Position Summary The Machine Builder II is our most experienced hands-on build role. You will take full ownership of complex mechanical assemblies from start to finish — reading and working from engineering drawings, selecting and operating the right tools and equipment, fitting and aligning precision components, and verifying your work meets specification before it leaves your bench. You'll work alongside engineers and fellow builders on demanding builds that require real skill, sound judgment, and a sharp eye for quality. What You'll Do Own the full assembly process for complex custom machines — from component prep and layout through final fit-up, testing, and sign-off Read, interpret, and build from engineering blueprints, assembly drawings, GD&T callouts, and technical specifications Select and operate hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, depth mics, dial indicators) to achieve tight tolerances Set up and operate tool room machine tools including mills, lathes, surface grinders, drill presses, and band saws as needed during the build process Inspect and test completed assemblies and systems — identify discrepancies, troubleshoot root causes, and make necessary adjustments Collaborate directly with engineers and the Assembly Supervisor to resolve technical issues and optimize build sequences Apply understanding of fabrication and finishing processes (including welding and paint prep) to support complete machine builds Operate forklifts and other industrial equipment to safely handle and position heavy components and assemblies Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and adhere to all safety protocols Travel to customer sites as needed to support machine installation, startup, and commissioning Mentor and provide guidance to less experienced build technicians on the team What You Bring Proven, hands-on experience building and assembling complex mechanical systems you've done this work and done it well Strong ability to read and work independently from blueprints, assembly drawings, and engineering specifications Skilled use of precision measurement tools: micrometer, caliper, depth mic, dial indicator you know how to use them and you trust your readings Working knowledge of tool room machine tools: mill, lathe, surface grinder, drill press, band saw Solid understanding of mechanical systems, components, fits, and tolerances Experience with fabrication processes; welding experience is a plus Forklift operation experience Strong troubleshooting ability you can diagnose a fit or function problem and work through it systematically The mindset of a craftsman: detail-oriented, quality-driven, and accountable for your work Team player who communicates clearly and can work productively alongside engineers and fellow builders Dependable attendance and willingness to work overtime when production demands it Ability to stand for extended periods and safely lift up to 50 lbs Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required Technical or vocational training in a mechanical, machining, or manufacturing discipline strongly preferred Significant hands-on experience as a Machine Builder, Mechanical Technician, or comparable role in a manufacturing environment Demonstrated proficiency reading and working from engineering blueprints and technical drawings Solid knowledge of machining processes and materials Basic computer skills Work Environment Work is performed in a manufacturing environment with moderate noise levels. Required PPE includes safety glasses and OSHA-approved footwear; hearing protection as needed. The role requires physical stamina, manual dexterity, and the ability to handle repetitive tasks throughout the shift.
