Job Description

Position Summary APIC Solutions is seeking an experienced Senior Fire Alarm Technician to lead the installation, programming, troubleshooting, testing, inspection, and maintenance of fire alarm systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional environments. This position ensures all work complies with applicable codes, standards (such as NFPA 72), and manufacturer requirements, while maintaining a high standard of quality and customer service. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of hands-on experience, relevant certifications, and a proven track record of delivering reliable fire safety solutions. You will work independently on complex projects while also supporting and mentoring junior technicians. Key Responsibilities Installation & Configuratio n Install conduit, wire, fire alarm panels, initiating devices, notification appliances, and related hardware Program and configure fire alarm systems based on engineered drawings and system requirements Coordinate with electricians, general contractors, and project managers to ensure timely completion of installations Perform system startup and initial commissioning procedures Ensure proper integration with building infrastructure and fire safety systems Lead installation teams on complex or large-scale projects Service & Troubleshooting Diagnose and repair faults in existing fire alarm systems, including wiring, device, and panel-level issues Replace defective components and update system programming as needed Respond to emergency service calls during and outside of regular business hours as required Perform root cause analysis on system failures and implement preventive measures Maintain service records and document all troubleshooting and repairs Mentor junior technicians on troubleshooting methodology and best practices Inspection & Testing Perform comprehensive functional and acceptance testing of newly installed or existing fire alarm systems Conduct inspections according to NFPA 72, NEC, IBC, and local AHJ requirements Complete inspection forms, deficiency reports, and customer documentation accurately and promptly Document test results and prepare detailed redline drawings Verify compliance with applicable codes and standards Provide inspection reports and recommendations to clients Compliance & Safety Ensure that all work complies with NFPA, NEC, IBC, and local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) requirements Follow all safety practices, including proper use of PPE, fall protection, and lockout/tagout procedures Maintain a clean and organized work area and company vehicle Report safety hazards and near-misses to supervisors Stay current on code changes and regulatory updates Train junior staff on safety protocols and compliance requirements Documentation & Reporting Maintain accurate records of time, work completed, parts used, and materials ordered Complete and submit service reports, test results, and documentation to the office team or supervisor Communicate clearly and professionally with clients, building personnel, and team members Update system documentation and maintain equipment databases Prepare invoices and service documentation for billing purposes Prepare technical proposals and scope-of-work documents Customer Service & Communication Interact professionally with clients and building personnel Explain technical findings and recommendations in clear, non-technical language Coordinate service schedules and respond to customer inquiries promptly Build positive customer relationships and represent APIC Solutions professionally Provide technical training to clients on system operations and maintenance Serve as primary contact for complex customer issues Leadership & Mentoring Lead and mentor junior technicians, providing guidance on installation and troubleshooting Train apprentice technicians on fire alarm systems and best practices Share technical expertise to build team competency Contribute to process improvements and workflow optimization Participate in quality assurance reviews and job site inspections Required Qualifications Education & Experience High school diploma or GED required Minimum 5+ years of hands-on experience in fire alarm system installation, service, inspection, or maintenance Demonstrated expertise and proven track record with complex fire alarm projects Leadership or mentoring experience preferred Certifications (Required) NICET Level II in Fire Alarm Systems (required) Edwards EST Certified with FireWorks Preferred (required) OSHA 10 certification (OSHA 30 preferred) Manufacturer training/certification from major platforms Technical Skills Ability to read blueprints, riser diagrams, wiring schematics, and installation manuals Proficient in the use of multimeters, hand tools, and power tools Advanced familiarity with laptop-based programming software and electronic test equipment Strong knowledge of low voltage wiring and code requirements Understanding of fire alarm system architecture and signal flow Ability to program and configure systems independently Soft Skills Strong communication and customer service skills Detail-oriented and highly organized Ability to work independently or as part of a team Reliable, punctual, and professional demeanor Problem-solving ability and advanced troubleshooting mindset Leadership and mentoring capability Professional presentation and communication with clients Physical Requirements Ability to climb ladders and work safely at heights Comfortable working in ceiling spaces and confined areas Capable of lifting 50+ pounds regularly Ability to work in various environmental conditions Valid driver's license with reliable transportation and clean driving record Additional Requirements Willingness to travel to customer sites as required Flexibility for occasional after-hours or on-call work depending on service schedule Ability to pass criminal background checks and drug tests Strong commitment to safety and compliance practices Valid company vehicle operation and maintenance capability Preferred Qualifications NICET Level III in Fire Alarm Systems Notifier Certified Technician Silent Knight certified experience Siemens/Cerberus certified experience Fire-Lite certified experience EPA Section 608 certification for refrigerant handling Project management or coordination experience Knowledge of networked fire alarm systems and remote monitoring Building Management Systems (BMS) integration experience Previous supervisory or project lead experience Continuing education in fire safety technology Required Software/Systems Fire alarm system programming software (Edwards EST, Notifier, Fire-Lite, Silent Knight, Siemens) Multimeter and advanced electronic test equipment Laptop-based diagnostic and programming tools Service management and documentation software Microsoft Office Suite
