•Senior Access Control Technician Metro Detroit Integrated Systems, LLC (MDIS) Royal Oak, Michigan Full-time | Field-based throughout Metro Detroit Job Summary Metro Detroit Integrated Systems, LLC is seeking a Senior Access Control Technician to independently program, commission, integrate, and troubleshoot complex commercial and municipal electronic access-control systems. This is a true senior-level technical position—not a cable-pulling or device-mounting role. The right candidate will be capable of taking an access-control project from plans and door schedules through controller configuration, system programming, door-by-door commissioning, customer training, documentation, and final turnover. MDIS primarily uses Axis Communications and ICT Protege access-control systems. We also deploy UniFi Access on selected projects. Experience with Mercury controllers and other professional access-control platforms is highly valued. Access control is the clear focus of this position. Familiarity with CCTV, audiovisual, structured data cabling, fiber, paging, intercom, or other low-voltage systems is helpful but not required. The position requires enough practical networking knowledge to configure and troubleshoot IP-based access-control equipment, communicate effectively with customer IT departments, and recognize when a network issue requires escalation. The successful candidate does not need to be a network engineer. What We Need You should be able to: Lead complex commercial and municipal access-control installations from pre-installation planning through programming, commissioning, customer acceptance, documentation, and final project closeout. Review plans, specifications, submittals, riser diagrams, wiring diagrams, and door schedules. Configure access-control servers, controllers, panels, interface modules, readers, and associated field devices. Program cardholders, credentials, access levels, schedules, holidays, events, alarms, inputs, outputs, anti-passback, and lockdown functions. Commission readers, door-position switches, request-to-exit devices, electric strikes, magnetic locks, electrified panic hardware, relays, and power supplies. Diagnose system problems using event logs, controller status, wiring diagrams, meters, network tools, and field measurements. Verify fail-safe and fail-secure operation, emergency release, fire-alarm interfaces, egress, and power-loss behavior. Independently test and document every controlled opening before customer turnover. Coordinate professionally with customers, IT departments, general contractors, locksmiths, inspectors, fire-alarm contractors, elevator contractors, and other trades. Primary Responsibilities Install, program, configure, commission, service, and troubleshoot commercial electronic access-control systems. Work primarily with Axis Communications and ICT Protege systems, with UniFi Access used on selected projects. Configure and troubleshoot Mercury-based controllers and downstream interface modules when applicable. Program controllers, panels, readers, credentials, access levels, schedules, holidays, inputs, outputs, relays, request-to-exit devices, door contacts, alarms, anti-passback, lockdown functions, and event actions. Secure Channel, Wiegand, RS-485, and other supported device communications. Commission electric strikes, magnetic locks, electrified panic hardware, door operators, relays, and related power supplies. Test valid and denied access, request-to-exit, door-held and door-forced alarms, schedules, emergency release, power-loss behavior, lockdown operation, event reporting, and notifications. Integrate access control with CCTV/VMS, video intercom, fire alarms, elevators, gates, turnstiles, intrusion systems, and customer networks. Integrate access-control systems with intercoms and dial phones using a basic working knowledge of paging systems and SIP. Onboard controllers and devices and troubleshoot database, firmware, licensing, credential, communication, reader, locking-hardware, panel, and network issues. Work with authorized customer IT personnel to plan, configure, test, and document supported integrations between access-control systems and Microsoft Entra ID/Microsoft 365, Google Workspace Directory, LDAP, or other customer identity systems when requested. Protect operating customer systems by creating backups, documenting existing configurations, planning changes, testing results, and maintaining rollback options. Lead technicians and subcontractors when assigned and verify workmanship, progress, safety, and documentation. Maintain redlines, door and device schedules, panel records, IP information, configuration backups, test results, photographs, commissioning reports, and as-built documentation. Provide customer training and a complete technical handoff at project closeout. Assist with other low-voltage systems when needed and within demonstrated experience. Practical Networking Responsibilities The Senior Access Control Technician should be able to perform or coordinate basic networking tasks required for access-control commissioning, including: Configure static IP addresses, subnet masks, default gateways, and DHCP reservations. Connect access-control servers, controllers, intercoms, and other devices to customer networks. Understand VLAN assignments, switch-port configuration, tagged and untagged traffic, and basic network segmentation. Understand PoE and PoE+ requirements and recognize switch or power-budget limitations. Configure or verify DNS, NTP, device time synchronization, and supported remote-access settings. Use basic troubleshooting methods such as ping tests, device discovery, link-status review, IP-conflict checks, and switch-port verification. Recognize addressing, routing, firewall, latency, packet-loss, and connectivity problems affecting system operation. Identify required ports and services and coordinate firewall or routing changes with authorized customer IT personnel. Document IP addresses, network settings, device names, switch connections, and final system configurations. Avoid unauthorized changes to customer firewalls, routing, production VLANs, identity systems, or other network infrastructure. MDIS frequently connects equipment to customer-provided networks using Cisco, Aruba, HPE, Meraki, Extreme Networks, and other manufacturers. MDIS also designs and deploys networking solutions when included in the approved project scope. Access-Control Technology MDIS primarily works with: Axis Communications access control ICT Protege UniFi Access on selected projects Mercury controllers and interface modules Relevant Axis or ICT experience is strongly preferred. Candidates with advanced experience on other professional platforms—such as LenelS2, Genetec Synergis, Software House CCURE, Avigilon ACM, Brivo, PDK, Galaxy, or comparable systems—are encouraged to apply. We are looking for transferable access-control knowledge, strong troubleshooting ability, and demonstrated programming and commissioning experience—not familiarity with every brand. Required Qualifications Demonstrated senior-level experience programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting commercial electronic access-control systems. Experience personally delivering complete systems—not only pulling cable, terminating devices, or mounting readers. Proven experience with complex multi-door or multi-site commercial, municipal, industrial, educational, or similarly security-sensitive projects. Strong knowledge of access-control controllers, panels, interface modules, readers, credentials, electronic locking hardware, relays, power supplies, inputs, outputs, and supervised circuits. Ability to read and work from plans, specifications, submittals, door schedules, riser diagrams, and wiring diagrams. Practical IP-networking knowledge related to access-control systems. Basic working knowledge of paging systems and SIP sufficient to support access-control integrations with intercoms and dial phones. Strong systematic troubleshooting and problem-solving ability. Understanding of fail-safe and fail-secure hardware, egress, emergency release, fire-alarm interfaces, and life-safety boundaries. Ability to work independently and take technical ownership of assigned projects. Professional communication and customer-service skills. Valid driver's license and ability to travel regularly to customer jobsites throughout Metro Detroit. Ability to work from ladders or lifts, use required PPE, carry and position tools and materials, and work in active construction and occupied facilities.
