This role handles everything from minor gelcoat touch-ups and buffing to structural repairs on hulls, stringers, and transoms. Work shifts seasonally between cosmetic prep and quick-turn repairs during peak season and larger structural repair or restoration projects during the slower winter months. Key Responsibilities Inspect and assess fiberglass damage, including cracks, stress fractures, delamination, and blistering Perform structural fiberglass repairs on hulls, stringers, transoms, and decks Grind out, patch, and lay up fiberglass cloth and resin according to proper repair procedures Match and apply gelcoat repairs, including color matching, spraying, and blending for a seamless finish Sand, buff, and polish hulls to restore shine and remove oxidation Repair or replace damaged core material (wood, foam) as part of structural repairs Communicate with the service advisor on repair scope, timelines, and any additional damage found Estimate time and materials needed for fiberglass and gelcoat repair jobs Maintain a clean, organized work area and properly store/handle resins, chemicals, and hazardous materials Follow safety procedures for respirators, ventilation, and handling of fiberglass dust and chemicals Keep spray equipment, sanders, and tools clean and in good working condition Document completed work, materials used, and labor time on repair orders for accurate billing Daily To-Do Checklist A general rhythm for the day — order and emphasis will shift with the day's repair order load and season. Review assigned repair orders and priority for the day with the service advisor Inspect assigned boats and confirm scope of fiberglass/gelcoat damage Set up work area with proper ventilation, protective equipment, and materials for the job Grind, patch, and lay up fiberglass as needed for structural repairs Mix and apply gelcoat, matching color and texture to the surrounding surface Sand, buff, and polish repaired areas to blend with the original finish Update the service advisor on progress, additional damage found, or revised timelines Document materials used and labor time on the repair order as work is completed Clean tools, spray equipment, and work area; properly store chemicals and dispose of waste Confirm next day's assigned repair orders and material needs before heading out Qualifications & Skills Experience with fiberglass repair, gelcoat application, and color matching Knowledge of structural boat repair techniques (stringers, transoms, hull layup) Steady hand and attention to detail for cosmetic finish work Comfortable using grinders, sanders, spray guns, and other fiberglass/paint equipment Understanding of proper safety practices around resins, solvents, and airborne particulates Ability to accurately estimate time and materials for repair jobs Prior experience in marine, automotive body/paint, or composite repair is a plus Work Environment This is a hands-on shop role at a marine dealership and service center, working in a dedicated fiberglass/paint bay with proper ventilation and safety equipment. Volume is highest during spring and summer with cosmetic touch-ups and quick-turn repairs, shifting toward larger structural repair and restoration projects during the slower winter months.
