Job Description

MASTER COMMERCIAL FLEET TECHNICIAN
Reports to: Truck Shop Manager Build a Career. Not Just Repair Trucks. Rental Guys is seeking an elite Master Heavy-Duty Fleet Diagnostic Technician to become the highest technical classification within our internal truck maintenance program. This position supports a private fleet of approximately 60-70 Class 8 highway tractors operating throughout Northern California and Northern Nevada. This is not a retail repair shop—our technicians maintain only Rental Guys equipment in a dedicated enclosed truck shop focused on fleet reliability, safety, and uptime.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead advanced diagnostics on complex mechanical and electrical failures.
  • Diagnose and repair Detroit Diesel DD13/DD15/DD16, Cummins X15/ISX, and
PACCAR MX
engines.
  • Perform engine overhauls, driveline, clutch, transmission, differential and wheel-end repairs.
  • Diagnose CAN Bus, J1939, multiplex wiring, ABS and aftertreatment systems.
  • Interpret OEM service information, wiring diagrams and fault-code data.
  • Mentor technicians and assist with difficult diagnostics.
  • Maintain complete repair documentation and uphold DOT compliance.
MASTER TECHNICIAN QUALIFICATIONS
    Minimum Requirements:
    • 10+ years progressively responsible heavy-duty diesel repair experience.
    • Minimum 10 years specializing in Class 8 highway tractors and trailers class 7 and 8.
    • Expert electrical diagnostics and root-cause analysis.
    • Advanced proficiency with Cummins INSITE, Detroit
    DDDL, PACCAR
    DAVIE, Eaton ServiceRanger, Bendix ACom and Allison DOC.
    • Ability to independently diagnose intermittent electrical and communication faults.
    • Experience with DEF, DPF, SCR, EGR and emissions systems.
    • Ability to mentor other technicians and lead complex repairs.
    TOOL REQUIREMENTS
    • A complete professional grade tool set capable of completing all aforementioned tasks of the master technician position

      COMPENSATION PHILOSOPHY
      Compensation ranges from $38.00 to $50.00 per hour and is based on demonstrated diagnostic ability, OEM certifications, ASE credentials, technical proficiency, repair quality, leadership, and specialized training—not simply years of service. The upper end of the range is reserved for candidates who can independently diagnose and repair the most complex mechanical and electronic failures with minimal supervision.
