Automotive Technician ResponsibilityJob Summary The Diagnostic Technician is responsible for identifying complex mechanical and electronic faults in vehicles. Unlike general service roles, this position focuses on high-level troubleshooting, utilizing advanced scanning tools, and interpreting data to provide accurate repair solutions for modern, sensor-heavy vehicles.
Core Responsibilities Basic Troubleshooting Skill:
Perform diagnostics on engines, transmissions, electrical systems, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), and drivetrains.
Data Interpretation:
Use OEM and aftermarket scan tools to read trouble codes, monitor live data streams, and perform bi-directional testing.
Electrical Mapping:
Read and interpret complex wiring diagrams and schematics to trace "parasitic draws" or open circuits.
Precision Repair:
Execute high-level repairs including ECU programming/reflashing, timing component replacement, and intricate sensor calibrations.
Quality Assurance:
Perform thorough road tests to verify that the "driveability" issue has been fully resolved and ensure no secondary codes are triggered.
Daily Duties System Scanning:
Conduct full-vehicle health checks using tools like Snap-on, Autel, or factory-specific software (e.g., Techstream, Ford IDS).
Documentation:
Clearly document the "Three Cs": Concern (the customer's complaint), Cause (the root of the failure), and Correction (the work performed).
Technical Consulting:
Act as a mentor to junior or "B-level" technicians, helping them understand why a part failed rather than just how to swap it.
Shop Safety:
Maintain a clean bay and ensure all specialized diagnostic equipment is calibrated and stored correctly.
Create Estimate:
On diagnose technician must creat estimate of the failed concern and get the right labor hours and failed parts so service advisor can get price and upsell.
Diagnostic :
Must document detail of the diagnostic for advisor to present to customer with up sell (
SAMPLE:
Smoke test best included short video show leak or no leak )
Workmanship/Craftsmanship :
Must keep comebacks to minimum
Requirements & Skills Certification:
ASE Certifications (specifically L1 Advanced Engine Performance) are highly preferred.
Analytical Mindset:
The ability to use logic to rule out variables; you don't just "parts cannon" a problem.
Tool Proficiency:
Mastery of oscilloscopes, multimeters, and smoke machines.
Physical Stamina:
Ability to operate in various positions (under hoods, under dashes) and lift up to 50 lbs.
Pay:
$28.82 - $40.00 per hour Expected hours: 30.0 - 40.0 per week
