The Department of General Services is currently recruiting for an Equipment Mechanic II to join their team. Under direction, inspects and diagnoses mechanical and electrical failures for automobiles, light trucks, and equipment; performs repairs and overhauls as necessary. The County provides this position a tool allowance of $75 monthly, as well as tool theft insurance. The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill any future opening(s), including Part-Time and Extra Help, in this class for up to six months.

Other related duties may be required and assigned. Inspects automotive equipment to determine corrective action needed, initiate computer data as related to mechanic's functions; perform repairs on driveability and other computer control problems, tune-up, and replace alternators. Perform smog inspections, and certification; uses specialized tools and test equipment including computerized diagnostic and smog machines, hoists, jacks, drill press, bearing press, and brake lathe. Repairs engines, automatic and standard transmissions, differentials, clutches, carburetors, and starters; perform brake overhauls, adjust valves, and replace tires, wheel bearings, universal joints, head gaskets, pistons, rings, and bearings. Services vehicles by changing oil, lubricating, inspecting all fluid levels, and fill as required; perform safety inspections of brakes and related equipment Operates computer scan tools, and interprets computer trouble codes to repair automotive computers; diagnoses and repairs electrical problems. Orders and picks up parts needed for repairs; maintains a neat work area; steam cleans parts and washes equipment. Fabricates parts; sets up police and fire vehicles, and creates parts as necessary; installs radios and other equipment. May perform acetylene and electric welding. Makes emergency and road calls as necessary.
EXAMPLES OF MARGINAL DUTIES
; Orders and cleans parts as required; washes equipment and performs clean-up duties.
Knowledge of:
Theory and operation of internal combustion engines; methods of repair of fuel, cooling, ignition, air conditioning systems, electrical, and on-board computer systems and automatic and standard transmissions; automotive maintenance procedures.
Ability to:
Diagnose mechanical work required to make necessary repairs; follow oral and written instructions; maintain established schedules and deadlines.
Education and Experience:
Two years of experience as a journey level automotive mechanic with some formal training in on-board computer systems, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. Essential Duties require the following physical skills and work requirements: Requires the ability to exert a considerable amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects and to stoop, crouch, climb and lift in performance of manual labor; perceive color, odor, texture and sound; operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles used in performance of daily tasks; ability to work around electrical currents and/or hazardous materials in a safe manner; may be subject to uncomfortable working conditions including exposure to dust, noise, heat or cold.
Other Requirements:
Position holder must supply the tools necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities assigned to the position.
Disaster Service Workers:
All Sutter County employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers during a proclaimed emergency and may be required to perform certain emergency services at the direction of the department and/or County.
License or Certificate:
This classification may require a valid California driver's license. Must maintain a driving record that will meet commercial insurance requirements.
