Job Description
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
All Fleet Mechanics High School Diploma/GED. Florida Driver's License with Acceptable Driving Record. Fleet Mechanic Apprentice Completed Technical School, Vocational School or Apprenticeship preferred Additional Minimum Qualifications of Fleet Mechanic I Two (2) Years Experience as a Fleet Mechanic Apprentice OR Two (2) Years Experience as a municipal or fleet mechanic which included a variety of vehicles and equipment ASE Certification(s) or equivalent preferred. Possession or ability to obtain within one (1) year: Class B CDL (Class A Preferred) Additional Minimum Qualifications of Fleet Mechanic II Five (5) Years Experience as a Fleet Mechanic OR Five (5) Years Experience as a municipal or fleet mechanic which included a variety of vehicles and equipment Three (3) Years Experience with heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. EPA 608 Certification or equivalent certifications. Advanced ASE Certification(s) or equivalent preferred. Possession of a Class B CDL (Class A Significantly Preferred). Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
All Fleet Mechanics Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures. Knowledge of work safety principles. Knowledge of the geography of the city, including street names and locations. Ability to safely operate a variety of vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs. Skill in prioritizing and organizing work. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees and the public. Knowledge of fundamental mechanical skills and understanding of tools and equipment Ability to troubleshoot mechanical problems Ability to work independently Fleet Mechanic I In addition to previous requirements: Ability to mentor and train Skill in the diagnosis and repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment utilized in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of preventative maintenance schedules. Fleet Mechanic II In addition to previous requirements: Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities, often using sophisticated computerized diagnostic tools Ability to create detailed reports and perform cost assessments for repairs. Knowledge of the methods, tools and equipment utilized in the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. Knowledge of preventative maintenance schedules for heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Public Works Field Operations Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions and reviews completed work for compliance with safety, procedure, accuracy, timeliness and quality.GUIDELINES
Guidelines include manufacturer maintenance and repair manuals, work safety guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of related vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair duties. The variety of equipment to be maintained contributes to the complexity of the work. The purpose of this position is to repair and maintain city vehicles and equipment. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of safe and well-maintained vehicles for a variety of department and city operations.CONTACTS
Contacts are typically with co-workers, vendors, suppliers, and other city employees. Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to talk, hear, see, walk, sit, and stand. The work is typically performed standing while intermittently bending, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and stooping. The employee frequently pushes, pulls, lifts light, medium, and heavy objects, reaches, grasps, climbs ladders, balances, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, performs repetitive motion, has good depth perception, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell. The work is typically performed indoors, occasionally outdoors, in tight spaces, in extreme heat, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to sun, noise, vibration, fumes, dust, dirt, grease, chemicals, traffic, machinery with moving parts and other hazards. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
