Job Description

Fleet Technician III Position Overview The Agency for Community Transit (ACT) has an opening for a full-time Fleet Technician III to perform safe and cost-effective maintenance and repair of all equipment owned and or/ operated by ACT/MCT. For consideration, please apply at http://jobs.actinfo.org/ This position pays a $2.00/hr shift differential for hours worked 5 p.m. to 5 a.m. There is a $3,500 sign-on bonus payable according to schedule.
Ten hour shifts available:
Sunday through Wednesday 2 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday 2 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Sunday through Wednesday 9 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Wednesday through Saturday 9 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. Essential Functions includes but are not limited to:
  • Performs the functions a Fleet Technician level 1.
  • Performs scheduled and non-scheduled repairs from vehicle write ups and inspections.
  • Leads in the diagnostics and repairs of all systems associated with the safe and efficient operation of the vehicle fleet. This includes heavy duty, light duty transit buses, sedans, minivans, large passenger vans, and equipment ranging from agricultural tractors to small engine items.
  • Knowledge of all aspects pertaining to gasoline and diesel engines, transmission, driveline, fuel, and aftertreatment systems.
  • Ability to do minor to full chassis engine teardown and reassembly with gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Strong diagnostic knowledge of engine internals.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair large automatic transmission (Voith/Allison) for out of warranty repairs.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical, electronic and wiring systems in the 12 and 24 volt range.
  • HVAC certifications are preferred but not required upon hire.
  • Extensive knowledge of larger HVAC Thermo King systems preferred.
  • Extensive understanding of wiring diagrams and troubleshooting trees provided by OEM's
  • Notifies supervisor of repairs or problems requiring additional or unusual maintenance work.
  • Assist Fleet Technicians 1 and 2 in diagnostics and decision-making with the approval of leadership.
  • Shifts buses into service quickly and safely as needed.
  • Records all work completed and/or in progress into the computerized maintenance system.
  • Provides drivers with technical assistance via the 2-way radio system.
  • Stay current on latest practices as applicable to the Agency's needs including proper safety practices.
  • Keeps his/her workplace clean and safe.
Qualifications/Requirements High School education or equivalent. Must be able to read and understand schematics. Knowledge on board communications, electronics, and light repair. Ability to obtain section 608 air conditioning certification. Must be skilled in various areas of vehicle preventative maintenance repair and troubleshooting (e.g., gasoline and diesel engine systems, transmission, H.V.A.C., hydraulic/air brake systems, suspension, drive-line, and compressed air systems). Possess knowledge of proper safety precautions and use of safety equipment. Possess, or can obtain within 30 days of initial employment, a valid Class B CDL driver's license with airbrake endorsement. ACT can provide training and licensing to obtain Class B license after passing written testing at the Illinois Secretary of State Driver's License Office and receiving a state issued CLP with air brake endorsements. Experience using computer applications or the ability/willingness to learn. Clean and neat appearance. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Normal working conditions for this position are typical of a ventilated automotive garage environment. The position is exposed to high noise levels, oil, grease, cleaning agents, fuels, fumes, and all types of weather conditions. Capacity to work beyond standard hours when needed to address maintenance needs. Physical requirements of the position include full range of motion in all extremities. Possess the ability to lift and maneuver objects weighing up to 70 pounds (e.g., a bus tire). Must be able to walk at least one mile and work standing, bending, and stooping. Position may require performing tasks while laying flat on back or while arms are lifted above head. Must be able to pass Department of Transportation physical exam and drug screen.
