Job Description
Position Title:
Mechanic - Afternoon Shift (1:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.)
Reports To:
Director of Transportation / Fleet Maintenance Manager
Position Summary
The Mechanic is responsible for performing skilled repairs, maintenance, and preventative service on District buses, trucks, automobiles, and other motorized equipment. This position helps ensure the safety, reliability, and operational readiness of the District's transportation fleet and related equipment.
Essential Functions
- Perform skilled maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on District buses, trucks, automobiles, and other motorized transportation equipment.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and related system issues.
- Perform major engine, transmission, and drivetrain repairs and overhauls as needed.
- Service and repair brake systems, steering components, suspension systems, and chassis assemblies.
- Conduct electrical diagnostics and complete necessary repairs.
- Perform body repairs, painting, and interior maintenance.
- Repair and maintain exhaust systems, hydraulic systems, tires, glass, and other vehicle components.
- Complete preventative maintenance inspections and services in accordance with established schedules and industry standards.
- Maintain accurate service and repair records.
- Perform all duties in accordance with safety regulations, established procedures, and industry best practices.
Marginal Functions
- Wash buses and other fleet vehicles as needed.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized shop and work area.
- Assist with other transportation maintenance duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
- Regular standing, walking, climbing, stooping, crouching, kneeling, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and handling tools and equipment.
- Frequent lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 25 pounds.
- Occasional lifting of heavier items weighing 25 to 60 pounds or more, with or without mechanical assistance.
- Visual acuity sufficient for close work, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
- Work is performed in both indoor shop and outdoor settings.
- Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical systems, vehicle fluids, and equipment.
- Frequent exposure to noise levels requiring raised voices for communication.
- Occasional exposure to varying weather conditions, fumes, and other environmental conditions typical of a vehicle maintenance facility.
