About the Position Under the direction of the Superintendent of General Services, the Fleet Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and upkeep of the Town's extensive fleet of vehicles and equipment. This is a hands-on position working primarily in the garage, with approximately 80% of the work indoors and 20% outdoors. The Fleet Mechanic works independently and uses considerable judgment in diagnosing problems, planning and scheduling repairs, ordering parts, and keeping the Town's fleet safe, reliable, and ready for service.

Automobiles and trucks Diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles Tractors Loaders and sweepers Generators and air compressors Snowplows and snow-removal equipment Hydraulic and pneumatic equipment Other Town-owned vehicles and motorized equipment Responsibilities The Fleet Mechanic will perform a wide range of mechanical and maintenance duties, including: Diagnose, repair, and maintain gasoline and diesel engines and vehicles Repair and maintain transmissions, clutches, drivetrains, suspension, steering, brakes, electrical systems, cooling systems, exhaust systems, and hydraulic equipment Perform routine and major tune-ups using appropriate diagnostic and test equipment Install, maintain, and repair snowplowing equipment and other vehicle accessories Weld, fabricate, and modify equipment and parts as needed Perform emergency roadside and fleet repairs when necessary Maintain the Town's gas and diesel fuel pumps Maintain accurate service records, including mileage, hours, parts, labor, and repair history Maintain inventory of parts, tools, and equipment Assist with NH State inspection preparation and compliance Operate vehicles and equipment as needed to diagnose problems and verify repairs Provide guidance to vehicle operators regarding routine maintenance and minor repairs Assist the Highway Department with snow removal and other winter maintenance activities as needed Qualifications The ideal candidate will have: High school diploma or equivalent 3-5 years of experience in automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, or fleet mechanical repair Strong knowledge of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance and repair Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and perform repairs independently Valid CDL with tanker endorsement, or the ability to obtain one within 90 days ASE certifications or similar credentials are preferred CAFM, CAFS, or similar fleet management certification is preferred Extensive relevant fleet experience may be considered in place of specific certifications Ability to work independently while maintaining effective working relationships with coworkers, other Town departments, and the public Ability to safely perform moderate to heavy physical work, including occasionally lifting or moving up to 80 pounds Schedule & Work Environment Regular schedule: Monday-Thursday, 6:00 AM-4:30 PM The position also participates in a rotational on-call schedule supporting the Highway Department. Evening and weekend work may occasionally be required for emergency fleet repairs, snow removal, winter operations, and other department needs.
