This position is primarily focused on preventive maintenance, inspections, routine repairs, and identifying mechanical issues before they lead to breakdowns. The ideal candidate has experience working on diesel trucks or heavy equipment and is comfortable performing regular maintenance on a busy working fleet. Experience with garbage/refuse trucks is preferred but not required for a candidate with strong heavy-duty maintenance experience. Key Responsibilities Preventive Maintenance & Inspections Perform scheduled PM services on garbage trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles. Complete oil and filter changes, lubrication/greasing, and fluid checks and changes. Inspect brakes, tires, suspension, steering, driveline components, belts, hoses, batteries, and other wear items. Inspect hydraulic hoses, cylinders, fittings, and components for leaks, wear, or damage. Perform routine air brake inspections, adjustments, and repairs. Identify worn or damaged components during PMs and address problems before they result in roadside breakdowns. Perform DOT-related inspections and correct defects found during inspections or reported on DVIRs. Routine Repairs Replace brakes, hoses, belts, batteries, lights, filters, sensors, and other common fleet components. Perform basic electrical troubleshooting and repair lighting, wiring, and connection issues. Diagnose and repair minor air, hydraulic, and mechanical leaks. Assist with repairs to PTOs, hydraulic systems, packer bodies, cylinders, and other refuse equipment. Assist senior mechanics with larger engine, transmission, hydraulic, and equipment repairs when needed. Respond to occasional road calls or breakdowns as required. Fleet & Shop Support Document completed PMs, inspections, repairs, and parts used in the fleet maintenance system. Clearly communicate additional repairs or safety concerns discovered during inspections. Help ensure trucks are repaired and returned to service as quickly and safely as possible. Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and organized condition. Follow company safety procedures and proper PPE requirements. Qualifications 2+ years of mechanical or fleet maintenance experience preferred. Experience working on diesel trucks, commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, or refuse trucks strongly preferred. Working knowledge of preventive maintenance, air brakes, suspension, steering, and basic electrical systems. Hydraulic experience is a plus. Ability to recognize worn or failing components during inspections. Ability to safely use standard mechanic tools, shop equipment, jacks, and diagnostic equipment. Valid driver's license required; CDL Class B is a plus but not required. Must be dependable, safety-conscious, and able to work as part of a busy fleet maintenance team. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work in both shop and outdoor environments.
