Job Description
Company Overview We are a family-owned environmental services company based in Wantagh, New York. We operate a transfer station and provide transportation, consolidation, processing, and disposal coordination for regulated and non-hazardous industrial waste streams. We are hiring a CDL Class B Environmental Services Driver to pick up waste materials from client sites and transport them back to our transfer station. Position Summary The CDL Class B Environmental Services Driver is responsible for performing local, same-day pickups of containerized waste from client locations throughout Long Island, New York City, Westchester / Hudson Valley, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. This position is home daily. The driver will primarily operate automatic straight trucks. The role involves loading waste at client sites, completing manifesting paperwork and applying labels, placarding, and delivering materials safely back to our Wantagh transfer station. This is a hands-on driving position. The right candidate must be comfortable with physical work, regulated waste transportation, client-facing pickups, DOT compliance, and detailed paperwork. You will be a client facing representative of our company. Key Responsibilities Drive CDL Class B box trucks and straight trucks to and from client sites. Pick up containerized waste, including drums, totes, boxes, pallets, and related materials. Transport both regulated non-hazardous waste and hazardous waste when assigned. Load waste materials at client sites using lift gates, pallet jacks, drum dollies, pumps, hoses, and other equipment. Check that containers, labels, markings, placards, and paperwork match before leaving the client site. Identify obvious pickup issues, including leaking containers, improper closures, damaged drums, load discrepancies, or other unsafe conditions. Contact dispatch or management for direction when there is a problem at a pickup. Complete and maintain required paperwork, including manifests, bills of lading, pickup tickets, labels, scale tickets, chain-of-custody forms, photos, and signatures. Maintain accurate paper records for each pickup and delivery. Communicate clearly with dispatch throughout the day. Check in with dispatch when returning to the transfer station. Provide professional service when interacting with customers, facility contacts, schools, hospitals, labs, commercial buildings, and other client sites. Safely navigate tight city streets, loading docks, curbside pickups, elevators, basements, and other challenging pickup conditions. Follow all DOT, company, safety, and transportation procedures. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections and promptly report vehicle or equipment issues. Required Qualifications Valid CDL Class B license. Current Hazmat endorsement required . Clean CDL driving record, with no major violations within the past 3 years. Ability to pass DOT drug and alcohol testing. Current DOT medical card preferred; company can assist the right candidate with obtaining one if needed. Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. Ability to move drums and containers using proper handling equipment. Comfortable loading waste materials at client sites. Comfortable handling regulated and hazardous waste transportation assignments. Willing and able to complete detailed paperwork accurately. Strong communication skills and professional customer interaction. Ability to follow dispatch instructions and call for direction when pickup conditions do not match expectations. Comfortable with variable daily routes and early starts. Preferred Qualifications Prior environmental, waste, industrial services, or regulated materials transportation experience helpful but not required. Familiarity with DOT placarding strongly preferred. Experience operating box trucks or straight trucks in New York City, Long Island, and surrounding areas. Experience with lift gates, pallet jacks, drum dollies, pumps, hoses, and similar equipment. Familiarity with manifests, bills of lading, chain-of-custody forms, and regulated shipping paperwork. Tanker endorsement helpful but not required. Schedule This is a full-time, local / home-daily driving position. Routes are dispatched daily and vary depending on customer needs. Most days are scheduled for approximately 8 hours, but early starts and some overtime are often required. Weekend or emergency pickups may occur based on business needs. Compensation and BenefitsThis is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position. Pay commensurate with experience. Overtime paid after 40 hours in accordance with applicable law. Work Environment This role involves local driving, customer pickups, loading waste materials, physical work, paperwork, and transportation of regulated materials. Pickup sites may include industrial facilities, commercial buildings, schools, hospitals, laboratories, loading docks, basements, elevators, curbside locations, and tight city environments. The successful candidate must be safety-minded, dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable representing the company at client sites. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a reliable CDL Class B driver with a Hazmat endorsement, strong judgment, and a professional attitude. Prior waste experience is helpful, but we are willing to train a strong general CDL driver who has the required endorsement, a clean record, good communication skills, and the ability to handle paperwork and regulated materials responsibly.
