Under direction or working alone, repairs, services and performs major and minor repairs to semi-trailers, (specifically "tube trailers").
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are typical for this job classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth to address production needs and changing business practices. Following general direction from work order, inspect trailers and related equipment and determine the extent of required repair. Perform general repair work on trailers. Pull wheels, inspect wheel ends and parts Perform brake jobs Repair pneumatic, electrical and structural trailer systems such as, Service and spring brakes Brake hoses and valves Diagnose, repair and/or install ABS systems Repair/replace light system Fabricate and weld to repair equipment as necessary Fabricate sheet metal parts such as fenders and trailer cabinets New trailer fabrication Clean and maintain work area and equipment. Maintain records and necessary paperwork.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
1. Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in trailer maintenance and repair. 2. Various mechanical and electrical systems of trailers. 3. Standard practices of trailer maintenance and repair. 4. Methods and techniques of welding and fabrication. 5. Shop mathematics. 6. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
Ability to:
1. Perform a variety of duties in diagnosing, troubleshooting and repairing trailers, equipment and components. 2. Inspect trailers to locate mechanical and structural defects, to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and to determine corrective action. 3. Perform a variety of welding work. 4. Ability to use material handling equipment such as forklifts and overhead cranes. 5. Use various hand and power driven shop tools. 6. Prepare clear and accurate paperwork/forms and reports. 7. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. 8. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. 9. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and management.
Education and experience guidelines:
1. High school diploma preferred, not required. 2. Experience in trailer repair and maintenance or general welding knowledge preferred
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Environment:
Work is performed primarily in shop environment; exposure to noise, dust, grease, fumes, gases, all kinds of weather and temperature conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces; incumbents may be required to work extended hours including evenings and weekends.
Physical:
Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a mechanic shop environment; work underneath trailer chassis and grasp, crouch, sit, stand, bend, crawl, kneel, stoop, pull, reach, push, twist, and climb ladders; perform physical labor for extended periods requiring physical strength and endurance and use a variety of hand and power tools involving repetitive motion; lift and/or carry moderate to heavy amounts of weight, operate assigned equipment; see in the normal visual range with or without correction; hear in the normal range with or without correction; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.
Pay:
$17.75 - $25.00 per hour
