Job Description

AUTOMOTIVE SHOP FOREMAN AND DIAGNOSTIC TECHNICIAN
Position Summary:
Bottoms Bridge Tire & Auto Care, LLC is hiring an experienced Automotive shop foreman and Diagnostic Technician to lead technician execution and daily shop floor operations while continuing to perform advanced diagnostic and repair work. This is a hands-on leadership position; not a service writing, parts management, or desk only supervisory role. The Foreman will work closely with the Front Office Manager and Parts Manager while maintaining direct responsibility for technician productivity, continuous vehicle workflow, complex diagnostics, repair quality, and timely resolution of technical issues. The position is expected to provide strong flow leadership and resolve routine operational and technical concerns without requiring regular owner intervention.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Advanced Diagnostics and Repair Diagnose complex electrical, drivability, starting and charging, HVAC, network communication, intermittent, and mechanical concerns. Use scan tools, wiring diagrams, manufacturer service information, meters, scopes, and other diagnostic equipment effectively. Verify the customer's concern and identify the actual cause before recommending a repair. Document test procedures, readings, findings, confirmed causes, recommended corrections, and final verification clearly. Perform advanced repairs and assist with general repair work when workflow requires it. Prevent unnecessary parts replacement and "parts-cannon" diagnosis. Identify when additional diagnostic authorization, equipment, information, or outside support is required. Technician Dispatch and Workflow Review waiters, appointment drop-offs, diagnostic work, parts-arrived jobs, carryover work, and open repair orders each morning. Assign work based on technician workload, capability, certifications, equipment, and repair complexity. Reassign work when capacity, parts availability, or promised completion times change. Ensure technicians pull ready parts-arrived work before starting lower priority work. Monitor vehicles throughout the day and intervene when a repair order stops moving. Keep technicians focused on completing the assigned work before creating avoidable work in progress. Identify threatened completion times and communicate them to the Front Office manager before the customer's promise is missed. Maintain a clear next action and accountable owner for every repair order on the shop floor. Technical Leadership and Technician Development Provide real time technical direction and coaching. Help technicians improve diagnostic processes, repair accuracy, DVI documentation, efficiency, and tool usage. Review complex diagnostic plans before excessive time or parts are committed. Assign development work that stretches technician capability without placing customers, vehicles, or the business at unnecessary risk. Pair developing technicians with experienced technicians when appropriate. Reinforce the difference between a customer symptom, diagnostic result, confirmed causes, and recommended correction. Share technical knowledge instead of allowing critical information to remain dependent on one person. Identify individual training needs and recommended specific training or certification plans to management. DVI and Technical Documentation Ensure technician recommendations identify the component, observed condition, supporting measurement or test result, and reason for the recommendation. Require useful photographs and measurements where applicable. Return vague, unsupported, contradictory, or incomplete technician notes for correction. Help technicians separate confirmed failures from conditions requiring additional diagnosis. Confirm mileage-based recommendations are technically appropriate and supported by the available service history. Prevent incomplete or misleading findings from reaching the front office. Support complete, legitimate repair recommendations without encouraging unnecessary work .
CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COMMUNICATION
The Foreman is expected to maintain clear operating hand-offs with the Front Office Manager and Parts Manager. Technical findings and completion risks must be communicated before they affect the customer promise. Parts problems must be reported immediately with the repair order number, affected job, technical requirements, and decision needed. Additional work must stop until the front office obtains customer authorization. The Foreman should provide technical facts and realistic timing; not make unauthorized price, discount, or customer commitments. Customer facing communication remains with the Front Office Manager and assigned Service Writer unless management directs otherwise.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
At least five years of professional automotive diagnostic and repair experience Strong electrical and drivability diagnostic ability Demonstrated ability to diagnose systematically instead of replacing parts based on assumptions Ability to read wiring diagrams and interpret scan data, test results, and manufacturer service information Experience using modern scan tools and diagnostic equipment Strong repair-order and technical-documentation habits Ability to prioritize and coordinate work across multiple technicians Ability to coach technicians while maintaining accountability Professional communication skills Valid driver's license and safe driving record Personal tools appropriate for advanced diagnostic and repair work
Strongly Preferred:
Previous Shop Foreman, Lead Technician, Team Lead, or Diagnostic Technician experience ASE certifications, particularly A6, A8, or L1 Virginia State Safety Inspector license or the ability and willingness to obtain one Experience developing General Service and mid-level technicians Experience with digital vehicle inspections and shop-management software Experience diagnosing intermittent electrical and network communication concerns You may be a strong fit if you: Can produce advanced diagnostic work while leading other technicians Remain calm and decisive when multiple vehicles require attention Address problems directly instead of allowing repair orders to stall Hold technicians accountable without creating unnecessary conflict Enjoy teaching and developing other technicians Believe documentation and QC are part of the repair Share technical knowledge Can balance productivity with safety, accuracy, and customer trust Want meaningful authority and accountability for shop-floor performance This position will not be a good fit for someone who wants to supervise without producing, avoids difficult diagnostics, resists digital documentation, allows work to sit without a next action, or keeps technical knowledge to themselves.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Compensation will be based on experience, diagnostic capability, certifications, leadership background, and the final compensation structure agreed upon during the hiring process.
HOW TO APPLY
Please submit your resume and a brief response addressing: Your experience diagnosing complex electrical, drivability, or intermittent concerns. Your experience leading, dispatching, or developing technicians. Your current ASE certifications and Virginia State Safety Inspector license status. The diagnostic tools and systems you are most experienced using. An example of a difficult diagnostic concern you successfully resolved. Bottoms Bridge Tire & Auto Care is an equal opportunity employer. Employment decisions are based on qualifications, demonstrated ability, performance, and business needs.
