Job Description

General Maintenance Under the direction of the Facilities Superintendent and Facilities Manager, is responsible for the upkeep of a facility, such as dorm building, classrooms, labs, office building. They would be skilled in a variety of areas including plumbing, carpentry, and electrical systems and completing preventative maintenance. The General Maintenance position will be given specific responsibilities commensurate with their abilities.

    Job Title Supervised:
    Not Applicable Essential Job Duties are but not limited to:
    • Survey buildings and repair mechanical systems to ensure they are consistent with health and safety standards
    • Perform maintenance of electrical systems (replace light bulbs and sockets, clean and repair circuit breaker panels etc.)
    • Assist in the setup of ventilation, refrigeration and other systems and conduct repairs when necessary
    • Maintain heating and plumbing systems to ensure functionality
    • Inspect alarm systems (fire, protection) and schedule repairs when needed
    • Perform manual repairs when necessary (fix locks, replace windows etc., change air filters.)
    • Prepare classrooms for incoming classes; remove or rearrange furniture for events or classes, as needed
    • Paint, remodel, refurnish areas as needed
    • Perform preventative maintenance on buildings by performing a variety of skilled carpentry, electrical, painting, plastering, dry walling, plumbing, heating, limited air conditioning and mechanical repair work, door hardware, keying, exit and emergency lighting.
    • Repair electrical lighting systems and fixtures.
    • Skilled in appliance repair.
    • Perform entry level plumbing work including the installation, repair and replacement of plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, faucets, water heaters and pipes.
    • Perform adequate level of carpentry work including the repair of porches (stairs, decking, walls, windows, siding, doors, and other carpentry work.
    • Install, maintain, and repair a variety of floor coverings such as carpeting, tile, linoleum and wood, experience with installation of laminate countertops.
    • Conduct general upkeep procedures (e.g., landscaping) and other tasks as assigned (painting, carpentry etc.)
    • Requires flexibility and understanding that all maintenance staff may be required to perform duties outside their normal area of expertise to meet the mission and goals of the Facility Services Department.
    • Move office furniture, machinery, equipment, other materials, as requested.
    • Recognize danger and safety hazards; propose methods to eliminate them
    • Maintain good housekeeping and safety of work area
    • Operate machinery such as forklifts, scissors-lifts
    • Load and unload materials and supplies
    • Operate vehicles such as DISL vans and trucks to transports tools, equipment's, and personnel to various job sites
    • Know and comply with Occupational Health and Safety regulations that apply to work actions and conduct on the job, including Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) instructions, and the use of personal protective equipment whenever required.
    • Does garden/yard upkeep by mowing the lawn, collecting trash etc.
    • Participate in our annual Discovery Day (held annually on a Saturday)
    Requirements:
    Preferred Skills
    • 1-3 years in general maintenance preferred
    Education:
    • HS Diploma/GED required
    • Valid License to practice profession preferred, highly recommended
    Experience:
    • Experience in general maintenance and repairs
    • Demonstrable ability to use hand and power tools; propane torch; welding equipment; were rooter
    • Thorough knowledge of safety procedures and legal regulations and guidelines.
    • Ability to follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers
    • Computer skills needed to record keeping and communication
    • General knowledge of electrical, carpentry, and plumbing maintenance.
    Physical Abilities:
    • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
    • Standing, lift overhead, squatting and ability to crawl in small spaces. Occasional climbing ladders.
    • Work outdoors in various conditions including heat and humidity, rain, dust, noise, and cold, also wet.
    • Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, around gas lines, around fumes, and toxic chemicals, outside and inside.
    • Physical stamina and dexterity
    Interpersonal Abilities:
    • Interact with clients, coworkers, managements, staff, and students in a courteous and professional manner, with particular attention to excellent customer service.
    • Follow all DISL policies and procedures
    • On call maintenance for all facilities 24/7
    • Must be able to work independently and without close supervision or with a team.
    • Valid Driver's License
    • Very good communication and interpersonal skills
    • Detailed oriented.
    • Ability to plan, organize, and implement projects.
    • Must possess good oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to trouble-shoot problems.
    • Ability to meet deadlines with limited oversight
    • Demonstrate personal integrity and trustworthiness
    • Manage stressful situations and changing priorities effectively
    • Regular and predictable attendance is required

    $18.00 - $19.00 per hour
