Job Description
Field Technician - GIS Mapping & Road Sign Retroreflectivity Job Summary We're looking for a reliable, detail-oriented Field Technician to collect GIS mapping data and retroreflectivity measurements on road signs. This is a project-based, 1099 independent contractor opportunity involving outdoor fieldwork with mobile apps, GPS devices, and specialized measuring equipment. No ArcGIS or previous GIS experience is required—training will be provided. Responsibilities Locate and map road signs using mobile apps and GPS equipment. Measure road sign retroreflectivity using specialized equipment. Record sign types, locations, conditions, and measurement results. Take clear photographs and complete digital field forms. Follow equipment setup, calibration, and measurement procedures. Review collected data for accuracy and completeness. Report damaged or missing signs, access issues, and equipment problems. Follow established roadside safety procedures. Communicate daily progress to the project lead and submit completed field data. Qualifications Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, and mobile applications. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow data collection procedures. Reliable, organized, and able to work independently. Comfortable working outdoors and near roadways under established safety procedures. Able to walk on varied terrain and carry field equipment. Able to travel to assigned project locations. Preferred, but Not Required Experience with field data collection, surveying, inspections, or traffic signs. Familiarity with GPS devices, digital maps, or retroreflectivity equipment. Experience with roadside or work-zone safety.
